Have been up here many times over the past 40 years. Way back then you would hardly see another soul, and could enjoy the beauty of the circle and surrounding moor in peace. How times have changed. Arrived around 7pm to find two groups of campers, open fires, and the local fire brigade asking them to put out their fires for fear of seeing the heathland ablaze. This is private land with polite requests at each entrance not to camp or have fires. Respect now seems to be a thing of the past. The fire officers can and spoke to us and told is how there were over 2000 people camping there for the solstice. Mad. We had visited to watch the meteor shower, hoping the at the elevation and distance from the towns would give us the best view in a peaceful setting. The campers by the circle lit their huge fire moments after the fire brigade disappeared from view, as did the other group. Then their rather bizarre drumming and chanting music got turned up to full volume. The group of lads were clearly just up there for a drunken night out. During the evening other people arrived. Joss sticks lit in the centre pit of the circle, chanting and meditation, alcohol offerings and libations, it was all happening here. Who knew it would be such a busy and noisy place. We did get to enjoy some of the meteor shower and left the more around 11pm to return to the quieter realms of our campsite. I still give this place 5 stars as it is a very special place despite the lack of respect shown by some visitors. We returned a few days later in daylight to explore more of the heathland and its interesting history and associated remnants. Well...

The worst thing about visiting here is the parking. There are plenty of parking spaces but they soon get used. Get there early!! Obviously, saying that should go without saying that visiting the nine ladies is very popular, especially when the sun is out. No matter which way you come from once you get parked, it's a very pleasant walk. There are quite a number of little diversions to explore before you actually get to the nine ladies and the views are spectacular. We went as a family with a packed picnic to look forward to and it was lovely to sit, have our picnic relax in the sun and take in the scenery of the bronze aged, 5000+ years, nine ladies. The Derbyshire response to Stonehenge!! Certainly a great place to visit, especially on a sunny day with a picnic planned. Please be aware that there are some strict rules. No fires. No barbecue. No littering. No camping. No anti social behaviour. Fines start at on the spot £100 up to £1,000. The area is a historical, archaeological site after all and is...

Oh what a beautiful place to visit 😊 it is very tranquil and magical, when you walk in the forest one moss is so soft under your feet it feels like you're walking on clouds. We got in through the little pathway on Lees Road. You would need to drive slowly down the country lanes as the forest is not signposted and very few footpath signs as well. Furthermore you would need to find a suitable place to park so you don't obstruct the already tight country lanes. But this is not hard to find. There are lots of sheep grazing in the fields nearby so if you got doggies that are not good around livestock please keep them on the lead. Once you get to the foresty park you can let them off for a little run but as you go up towards the Nine Ladies you would need to keep them on the lead. Nevertheless it is a wonderful place to visit and I'm happy we did. We will definitely be going back again, maybe with a little picnic next time. 😇

Just an unexceptional circle of standing stones in a clearing on a peak in Derbyshire. At least until you read that it's been there for 4,000 years. Then you begin to think of the many ceremonies, gatherings and maybe festivals which have been held there since it was first erected. It feels like a special place for various reasons. First it's setting high above the surrounding countryside gives it a feeling of isolation and security. And in the past, before you could drive up there, it would have been a tiring hike to reach the spot. That adds to the mystique of the place. It was possibly a refuge for wildlife which would have made it an important site to hunt game. Along with the bilberries and other wild foods, it would have seemed a fertile and fruitful place. A lovely spot to sit and contemplate while enjoying your lunch.

Such a peaceful place! Parked the car about 15 mins walk to the stone circle itself, easy path to follow but muddy on a wet day, so bring your wellies if you're heading out in the rain!!! Once at the stones, there is multiple paths you can take with stunning views all around. The stone circle is in a big open space of green, hard to miss it, as there is also an information board that explains its history. It brings a feeling of being very centered and a sense of calm. It's really beautiful and I would recommend to anyone who is in the area to go and explore. Saw many dog walkers, so dog friendly! My only downside is there isn't any bins as you're walking, only at where you can park your car so if you're planning on a picnic or your dog needs the loo, please take it with you and don't leave any litter!!
