A Must-Visit for Aviation and Cold War Enthusiasts
The National Cold War Exhibition at the RAF Museum Cosford is an incredible experience, offering a fascinating insight into one of the most tense and pivotal periods in modern history. The collection of aircraft is truly impressive, featuring iconic planes such as the Vulcan, Victor, and Valiant bombers, alongside a range of other Cold War-era military exhibits.
One key takeaway from my visit, however, is that time is essential. Arriving around 3 PM with only two hours before closing, I found myself rushing to take everything in. To fully appreciate the exhibits, read the detailed information on each aircraft, and explore the interactive displays, I would recommend allowing at least four hours.
Entry is free, which makes this museum an outstanding value, with the only cost being £7.50 for parking. For those using public transport, Cosford train station is within walking distance, making it an easily accessible destination.
Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a unique day out, this museum is well worth a visit—just be sure to give yourself enough time to...
Read moreImpressive assembly of immaculate aircraft of the period, mainly RAF, plus bits and bobs of British AFVs, RN might as well not exist. Some displays to contextualise historical context, rather dated and triumphalist. In 2020 and a count of where we are now, including 'the new Cold War', is desperately lacking.
I was surprised (no horrified) to find that there is no brochure catalogue or other take-home materials on this, a national museum.
I have been visiting this Museum regularly since it opened. Frankly, it is looking tired. Its aircraft make a major contribution to our national aviation collection. That's one thing. As a national cold war museum, though, it is just not up to scratch. The Cold War deserves much better than this. I could not but feel, disloyally, that the IWM would be making a better fist of things.
It can be only a matter of time before this disparity comes to wider attention. I took a young relative there this weekend. She has just studied the Cold War as part of GCSE History, and enjoyed it. Our National Museum just did not connect with her....
Read moreI thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Cold War exhibit and I am certainly going to return to it in the not-too-distant future. My one upset lay in the terminals placed around the complex; the information was immaculate and in such great detail, but I would have loved to be able to purchase an interactive CD or for it to be readily available on the Internet. As a student who is currently studying the Cold War era, I have had great difficulty in finding such an abundance of fascinating and highly detailed information on the subject. The material possessed by the machines is the most advanced I have found and would be invaluable to students such as myself. I therefore must request that this be made available, either through purchase or on the museums website. I thank you for an incredible and insightful display and will highly recommend the museum to my teacher and...
