Betton Farm — Attraction in East Ayton

Always found this place hit and miss for food, but as it’s nearby today we tried it again and won’t be returning. We ordered a jacket potato with tuna mayo & cheese, it came out like a ‘make your own’ with the fillings in tiny ramekins. When you go out for a meal you don’t expect to have to assemble your own food, the tuna mayo was dry, no sauces left on the table so I could make my tuna mayo, staff was all stood talking in the kitchen, not one worker in the restaurant. My partner ordered the steak pie, he was served a plate swimming in gravy, with 3 pieces of steak plonked under a thick dry pastry lid. When this was brought to us the waitress said ‘do you have enough gravy’ which was clearly a sarcastic comment as the plate was covered in it! The coffee was nice but I really cannot say the same for the food, it’s gone downhill. Go to this place. Order food. Eat and enjoy. I can't recommend highly enough, seriously. The staff were warm, friendly, efficient and accommodating. Table for 12? Can't do that, but we've got a 4 and an 8 next to each other, is that okay? Brilliant. The food was HOME MADE and delicious. Not a microwave in sight. We (8 adults and 4 children) all chose different meals and none of us was less than delighted. A big mistake for us - we called in on Tuesday 5th June en route to Scarborough and had just about the worst meal ever. There were Lamb specials on the board, the main menu being unimaginative and plainly average, so North Yorkshire being the land of the pie, I ordered lamb pie. An utter disaster combo of gristle and fat and tough meat; the chips were dark brown and covered in burnt oil, the peas were acceptable. I left my meal and gently told the waitress. OK love, she said, I'll tell the chef - I expressed astonishment that a chef had been anywhere near my pie which was just inedible. I normally only give decent reviews, preferring to believe that everyone has an off-day, but the style and attitude here suggested mass-catering regardless of quality was the prevalent culture.
