This is an excellent place to visit for anyone who likes history and archaeology. And totally free!!! Though only the footings and base towers and walls remain, the layout is fascinating to study and explore. There are some good explanation plaques 'here and there' and a few little stairs and room bases to find. You can walk around the outside or periphery of the castle remains - but still inside the moat (filled in water) - and the views and rural setting location are delightful. We visited the small local pub nearby where we found some great local history books. Look out for information on William Stone, a Water Diviner - rather famous in the village and so fascinating. Toilets here most useful. This village is very old - about 1000 years at least, being proud of its links with the Royal castle. This is the birthplace of the future King 'to be' Henry IV though the castle fell gradually into ruin particularly after (and due to) its notorious role in the Civil War. The pub serves no food but the best perculator coffee for miles around, at a very reasonable price. Park in a little tourist layby near to the castle and take some good shoes for walking across fields and scrambling over walls and rubble. Watch any children due to risk of falls. Take care underfoot. This was a stunning...
Read moreA lovely, quiet, peaceful place to visit in the village of Old Bolingbroke. The castle was the birthplace of Lincolnshire's only king, Henry IV. Though there isn't much of the castle itself left just a few walls and the Moat it has interesting info boards that explains certain points of how it was. A great place for kids to run about and hide and pretend they were knights of old. Unfortunately there are no cafes, pubs or eateries close by but it id an idesl place to take a picknick, dont forget a blanket or a rug to sit on. I cycled there through the Lincolnshire Wolds, from the coastal town of Cleethorpes, where there are some quiet country lanes but it is quite hilly. Rachel's Cafe at Hagworthingham is not too far for a reasonably priced menue though not sure if it's open at the weekends. Otherwise the town of Horncastle is well worth a visit with some...
Read moreIt's a free castle ruin so what more do you want to know?

I would run around the ruins imagining the bustle of the Medieval period. I would scale the walls and pretend to be attacking. I would hide in a hidden hole with a grate on top and pretend to be a prisoner who then escapes, having to evade and hide from my dad playing the role of a castle guard.
More recently I journeyed back and walked the grounds recalling these tales from my youth. Letting out a sigh of nostalgia and feeling warm in the knowledge that while many things from childhood have changed, this castle has not.
The gate caught my jeans and managed to unbutton them...
