As a walk without your dog, it's marvellous. If you crave RAF history, it's marvellous. If you have a dog, particularly a very hairy dog (mines a Cocker), what a nightmare today turned out to be. You may not have heard of Pirri pirri burrs before, so google them now and be warned. It's not that they are there, it's that there's no notice given. It is an invasive plant and really not good for the old pooch. Had there have been, we'd have left. I can now add to this review. I emailed the people responsible for Ostlers plantation and they have committed to installing better signage. They have also updated their website to include a warning. BZ to them for this prompt action. 25th July 24 I've just read an article on BBC web that the carpark has been closed whilst they get a firm in to clean up all the dog poo. It's something I did notice. Some dog owners seem to not only think it's ok to leave it on the floor (we're not in a town, it'll rot down) or they actually bag it up, but then chuck it somewhere. They really are dirty, lazy, thick, ignorant pigs. Don't be...
Read moreAn excellent few hours spent exploring. It's one of the hottest Easter Sundays we've had and it was nice to find a bit of shade. There's a couple of picnic tables dotted about in a clearing which provided somewhere to kick off the shoes and enjoy a sandwich and a cool drink but bring your own as this is a forestry commission site. No facilities apart from car park and a basic site map. But you won't get lost as it's easy enough to navigate. There's some nice views from the Western perimeter and plenty of signs of wildlife even though it's only April. Ostler Plantation was purchased from the MOD after the second world war and was then planted out as a mainly pine woodland but even today you can still find evidence of the buildings and infrastructure of the bomb dumps that we built here as part of RAF...
Read moreWe were looking for a place to take our Dogs for a walk in the shade if possible on a very Hot day. We had been here before so we drove in off the road, parked up and took the dogs out of the car. There were a few other cars parked but no one in sight. Off we went up a dry pathway. There are so many trees here, the birds were singing, bees were going about their busy of getting pollen. It was a beautiful day. We walked for about half an hour and felt that it was enough being it was so hot. There are so many trials that you can walk along, in and out of the trees or along paths of dust. The only thing that I felt was not good, was that there is No Dog Bin which would be of great help for all who bring there animals walking. Give a try, its worth it, look for the sign its only small so you...
