I've been to Castell Henllys Iron Age Village a few time, first time was back in 2005 or there about's, I found it kinda by accident I was on the main road heading towards Cardigan and happened to see to my left a roundhouse on a hill in the distance. I turned off the main road and managed to find the site. It was a damp September afternoon, as I walked through the woodland along its paths, the path took me up a steep hill and there in an opening stood a large Round house and what I took to be a grain store that was on stilts, the place felt magical. I'd not been there for around 9 years, I was on a late weeks holiday with my partner, we came to Castell Henllys on the Thursday 12th November, the site had changed a little there was a small cafe and a little gift shop, the staff were very kind and helpful, I was hoping to be able to use the bike they have for people that have difficulty walking, I now sadly fall into that category, they told me that the bike was being used, but they offered to drive us up in their vehicle if we could give them half an hour, so we went to have something at the cafe. Both myself and partner had a bowl of "Cawl" if that's how you spell it which was absolutely delicious, we were then taken by the sites car up to the area of the Round House Village, the driver then took us into the round houses and she was able to answer all the questions we both had. For me I find the Iron Age Village to be not only a magical place but also very moving, if it were possible I would love to be able to spend a few days and nights living in the village. It's a place I recommend everyone should visit...
Read moreIf you've ever driven past a funny shaped hillside, with what look like ridges cut into the top of it and wondered why, or what it originally looked like over 2000 years ago. This is the place that tells you. See what a Roman soldier would have seen. Handle a Celtic sword and learn how our original island ancestors made clothes, tools, stored food for winter and built the houses they lived in. With authentically dressed villagers that can guide you around and tell why each building is where it is and not just in a random place. Ask them any question even a silly one.. like why is the fireplace in the middle of the hut? Why didn't the straw roof catch fire? They will tell you the surprising reason. Set in beautiful countryside with a cafe by a stream. Start your journey back in time here, before heading into the discovery centre for a video and a look at the artifacts found during excavation. Then head over the bridge and along the river past a bronze age boat and up the hill to the village. Very helpful knowledgeable friendly staff. Wheelchair friendly but the hill is steep and the track is gravel. Fairly sure that you would be given a lift by car up to the village. The site is set up for large school visits. The price was £8 per adult, pretty reasonable as you can spend all day there. Both my partner and I loved it. Highly recommended for those that...
Read moreReally good afternoon out. Cafe was good and welcomed dogs inside which makes it excellent! There were several prices for entry listed on the website and a different one when we got there. As there were just a few pounds in it we didn't say anything as it was well worth the price of the ticket. We visited this place about 6 /7 years ago, and it does need some TLC now as it is starting to look a bit shabby. The farm animals were all in hiding but the signs say there are pigs and sheep somewhere in the muddy pens. There were very enthusiastic guides dressed up and giving talks and answering questions. A young chap with multiple swords and instruments shared information on Celtic culture and history at great length and even started singing which was a bit funny in the moment because it took us by surprise, but it made the visit and I would have liked to join in! There was a fire lit in one of the round houses which was great to see in action, however it was unsupervised, which seemed a bit risky with all the children galloping around the place. There is limited phone signal in this sheltered valley spot but there is free WiFi. The babbling brook and picnic spot is just magical. I would recommend this place for a...
