This is soo beautiful a place and so well equipped with paths and boardwalks that make it very easy to get lost in a waterworld of marshes and greenery and bird and animal life. It is without a doubt the loveliest and most natural RSPB reserve I have been to in 68 years so far tho I have not been to them all in the UK. The boardwalks are extensive. Several warm wooden seats in the sunshine give that needed sit down as well as well placed picnic benches but not too many. You can sit on one and watch trains from the reserve too or walk up into the field and look down on the cycleway and the reserve in general which is on the River Dee estuary. It is very pretty and includes woodland. The track in is mud and in the woodland, and has large ups and downs so you have to drive your car very slowly and very carefully to get in and use passing places as it is also the exit. With care its only 5 to 7 minutes. There are clean toilets and snacks and drinks available and loads of information. There are also some very fine viewing walls of wood with perspex windows to save going into hides tho there are a couple of hides. Its lovely and you can hear all the birds giving their spring recitals at the moment. I believe there are other reserves and other gardens and attractions nearby so plenty to see tho I think you need a whole day just here. In my 2 hours I had spare, I have not seen it all. The staff are truly happy and the loveliest helpful ppl. I was there to see someone very poorly and 2 hours here really...
Read moreMy partner and I were out for a bike ride and decided to call in to have a cuppa and see if we'd like to return another time for a proper visit. As we didn't have bike locks with us (we hadn't intended stopping off anywhere), we didn't want to leave our bikes out of sight in the racks provided. Our bikes, and so my partner and I, were refused entry to the area outside the visitor centre / cafe, despite our explaining why we didn't want to leave the bikes, and there being loads of room for them to be tucked out of the way but remaining in sight. Most unfriendly experience, but not surprising unfortunately, considering the local RSPB's policy of trying to close areas that have been walked by locals, and cycled by locals for generations. If we'd arrived in a coach, I think we'd have had a much different experience. As a child, I was an active member of the RSPB (although in Staffordshire), and was taught understanding and respect for our environment by the local enthusiastic volunteer kid's group leader, as well as by my grandpa and godfather who both took me out on the Burton, Little Neston and Parkgate Marshes regularly long before the RSPB started flexing it's righteous muscles locally. Such a shame that the RSPB is now teaching exclusivity and lack of understanding locally. Disappointing. We won't be returning to the...
Read moreRecently just became a member of RSPB and Burton Mere is just round the corner for me. Not see too many other RSPB places but if they're anywhere this good it means that it is absolutely worth supporting and visiting.
Burton Mere is situated near Dee river estuary which is just a walk away and is a place of its own - so remember to check it as well.
Both easily accessible by car or on your bike.
RSPB has got a good size car park.
Caffè is just being built.
Shop is well equipped with snacks and you can hire binoculars.
There are at least 3 fantastic hides. You can sit in dry, open the windows and watch the birds for hours.
The park itself is a good stretch so remember it'll take you easily over one hour (probably more) to go up and down.
I've been only a few times (10 in total maybe) but the amount of different birds I encountered is great. Not only water birds.
Took there friends and family which means that I do recommend this place to the people I love... I recommend it also the those who read Google Map...
