Anyone expecting to see the usual Roman Fort site common to those up by Hadrian's Wall will be surprised at what they find here. The actual Fort is nothing more than an outline covered in grass. Anyone hoping to see the Mosuleums uncovered by the t.v programme TIME TEAM, will be disappointed as they have been reburied. The main attraction is the Very well preserved Roman Bath House. This is protected under a shed like structure and you can view the remains which consists of the tiled floor and with tile built supports for the heating system. The whole site is level and wheelchair accessible with wheelchair accessible toilets. Good size car park attached to the site with dedicated disabled car park spaces. The site has a small shop but catering facilities are strictly limited.

Opening hours are a bit confusing as it depends on which website you look at. One site states daily from 10am until 4.30pm while another states daily from 11am until 5pm 😕. I can confirm that it's definitely open daily but I forgot to ask for the correct detils during my visit, sorry😡.

Enterance fees are Adults £5.00 Children £3.50 (under 4s free ) concessions £4.00. These fee's increase when special events are running, see their website for full details.

It's a small site but packs alot in and its well...

A very large site but only partially excavated to reveal the interesting remains of the senior officer's bath house and living quarters alongside the foundations of a roman road. Some of the rest of the barracks has been dug but re-burried so remains invisible.

I was not impressed by the reconstruction of the painted plaster walls inside the bath house which looked very contrived in conjunction with the remains of the hypocaust.

I also was rather astonished to see how much modern concrete was sitting on the roman wall forming a base for the wooden building currently covering that part of the site.

The site is only partially accessable to wheelchair users, there are stairs from the walkway to the level of the ruins.

What a great hidden gem this is. We decided to have a spontaneous Father's Day afternoon drive, and arrived at Binchester Roman Fort totally unplanned. This little fort has one of the best examples of a roman hypocaust I've ever seen. The bathhouse is covered in a modern building, the interior of which gives an authentic feel. Don't forget to look out for the 1700 years old footprints inside, and the beast of Binchester on the outside. The information boards are informative and in good condition. The lady who was on duty was talkative and informative which only added to a really good experience. Keep an eye out for the reenactment days in August, we will certainly...

My little daughter and I really enjoyed the fort more than I thought! I was warmly received by Mark, who gave us an overview of the history of the site and answered all our questions. Everything is well laid out, clearly marked and signed, and a lot of thought was put in to the site to make it relatable to the modern day. There are also a few interesting human touches at the fort that have been uncovered, so definitely check it out! It's a shame they haven't uncovered more yet! Update: they are offering Halloween activities for the half term (28 Oct-5 Nov 2023)! Check out their Facebook page for more info.

Absolutely ingredible place to visit. Visited this place as we where staying close by for the weekend. I have seen a few Roman fortifications over the years, including most of Hadrians wall. However this was just something else. It is the most preserved Roman bath house in the UK at almost 2000 years old. It really is an amazing place and so beautifully preserved. Mark the site manager is a pleasure to talk to, and has a wealth of knowledge about the site and its history. At only £5 per person, I can highly recommend a visit.
