Located at the head of Coledale Beck & in the shadow of Grizedale Pike, the mine can be approached easily on foot with only a small amount of uphill walking involved. The car park where you can start from is very small, so get there early if you want a space. It's located just above the lovely village of Braithwaite, which is where you'll have to park if no spaces are available (more uphill walking involved). If you are a seasoned walker I suggest climbing Grizedale Pike & then approaching the mine from the west. The views from the Pike are amazing.

The mine itself is fairly small with a few large buildings that are in various stages of disrepair. It's a very secluded and peaceful site. People who like a more sedate walking experience will enjoy the approach to the mine, which follows the small beck flowing out of the valley. It's not really possible to get lost & it's a great place for a picnic on a sunny day. Once at the mine you get the choice of either walking back out the way you came or climb out at the back of the...

Walked up to the mine from Lane Foot Campsite. A leisurely walk, mainly on a gentle climbing stone track, taking about 90 mins. There is a small car park at the start of the track. As you walk up the track the valley sides become ever more imposing and the mine comes into view with about a mile to go. The mine is situated at the head of the valley with Force Crag towering above it with a couple of waterfall tumbling down the crag. A truly amazing a sight and well worth the walk. The mine is only open a few days a year and not on the day we visited, the National Trust publish the days in advance on their website. Walking around the mine gives a sense of the place and history. The stillness and remoteness of the site are lovely. Well...

An interesting walk through Coledale from Braithwaite to the mine. There is a small car park at the start of the walk & at weekends the school car park in Braithwaite can be used as well. The mine buildings are locked but there is a description of the history of the mine. Check the National Trust website for open days when you can have guided tour of the few buildings. The walk up & back down Coledale gives fine views of the ...

Not really sure how to rate this so I'll go a happy medium. You can see from the pictures that I chose a rather cold day to visit so wasn't wanting to stand around for to long. Will revisit in warmer weather to investigate fully. However the views on the way up are lovely and the peaceful surroundings are just what you need to clear the mind. Just under 5 miles to walk there and back from the carpark.
