Mitchell's Fold is a bronze age stone circle on the shoulder of Corndon Hill. The rough circle is made of 15 stones but there may have been twice as many originally. The site is part of an extended network of Bronze Age constructions, including cairns, barrows and two more stone circles. Mitchell's Fold is located near the community and axe factory at Cwm Mawr, the centre of extensive trade network through central England and Wales. The name is derived from a folktale, where a magic cow with an endless milk supply appears to end a famine. A witch tries to milk the cow into a sieve and when the cow discovers the deceit it disappears. The village petrify the witch and imprison her in the stone circle. The site is accessed along a potholed single lane track. There is a small area to park. The area is very exposed and sensible footwear are...

Stunning scenery, incredible views, plenty of wildlife and a relatively unknown Bronze Age stone circle with the majority of stones intact - what's not to love?

If you visit on a very clear day you can see all the way to Snowdonia! I also spotted red kites - they seemed to be nesting high up and hunting down in the valley. Incredible to look down on them swooping about!

I also highly recommend spending some time at the stone circle itself - it's a magical place and you often have it all to yourself! Great spot for photos or just a quiet moment alone with the stones.

Quite a steep climb up (depending on route.) I hiked in from about 5 miles away but you can park in the carpark if you prefer. Plenty of paths to take once up top, turn it into a short or longer circular route, or just take in the stone circle itself -...

Mitchell's fold stone circle is a fantastic place to visit boasting breath taking views. The stones are certainly not as impressive as Stonehenge but the history and folklore surrounding the location is very interesting. There is lots of public walk trails to explore the area with nearby Stapley Hill only a short walk from the main stones.

Nearby is Corndon hill, only a short walk from Mitchell's fold and another small hill Lan Fawr. Both can be explored together with Mitchell's fold for a great day out. Mitchell's fold is also an excellent place for stargazing, boasting fantastic dark skies.

The carpark isn't too big and the small track leading to it can be a little bumpy,...

This is my favourite stone circle for a long distance in any direction. Definitely one of the best prehistoric sites of this part of the country! The circle itself is really quite striking, but the surrounds too (with excellent views all around, and some paths to numerous other, worthwhile sites) are also beautiful. On the day that I visited this stone circle, I'd planned out a little history road trip of 8 different sites throughout this part of the country - I visited this one first, and even though the whole trip was wonderful, this remained the best experience of the day by far.
