I thought about 5 stars because I love it here, but it's my home....so I am biased. It's the highest point on the island and on a decent walk you can enjoy views (on a clear day) that extend from Brighton to the East and the Isle of Purbeck (Dorset) to the West. Of course, you can also see much of the island as well as landmarks in Southampton and Portsmouth. Let's not forget the channel or looking down upon Wroxall and Ventnor too. Don't expect shops etc, it's just a great place to go and enjoy for what it is. If you are fit (or have an ebike) it's a nice easy ride once you are up there. No parking charges if you come by car. Could do with some bins for your doggy logs but hey, it's free and enjoyable! In summary then, good place to go for a walk or possibly ride. Also good just to drive there and sit in the car with tea. Hope this review helps! Update - I have been asked about wild camping- it's a big no no I am afraid, just checked...

The story ended by encountering the family meeting of cows after we left the hilltop of Shanklin Down. Oh, by the way, two magicians have cured a depressive door as we passing by,...
Read moreExcellent place for a walk, family and dog friendly. Flat easy walking, the area stays relatively dry under foot in the winter. Plenty of parking. Incredible views in any weather in all directions. Recommend walk around to the trig point on Shanklin down (to the north east), roughly 1 hr 30 min there and back. The history of the area is worth looking up, the down used to be the home of a WW 2 radar station. No bins on location, please take rubbish home with you. There is a dog poo bin down the hill as you drive away (please use, don't leave dog poo...
