Parking at the head of Thirlmere Dam. Plenty of Closed road signs however access from a small road off the A591 (NOT the Campsite one) is encouraged. No facilities here but free parking.
A fantastic walk, very steep in places (Feels relentless to be honest) however you are in the shade of the trees on hot days with beautiful views of Thirlmere dam and Helvellyn opposite as you ascend.
As you can see from the photos it is a very beautiful forests climb with moss covered trees, cotton plants in open areas and some fallen trees making for a "fairy fell" type feel. I recommend the direct route not the "Forest Access route" to enhance the experience.
The steps on the latter part are proper "thigh burners" so allow plenty of time for breathers and taking in the views. Walking across the "board walks" is rather special on the upper parts, in my view, as you are surrounded by the lush summer greenery with the "fresh cut grass" smells wafting about.
It gets even better from here, as you come over the top to a wooden viewing platform and can enjoy spectacular views across Thirlmere with that well deserved sense of achievement fresh in your heart. (possibly pounding heart if your a little older ;)
With countless grassy areas to sit yourself for the "perfect peak picnic" if planned ahead Raven Crag had all the ingredients and challenges to be one of those truly memorable special experiences. There's even an old Castle ruin at the base of...
Β Β Β Read moreAlthough the bridge over the dam is closed, still go down the road off the A591 (dual carriage way part), as there is a small parking area for about 6 cars, directly below the walk up to Raven Crag. The walk is steep, although you can follow part of the forestry track to make it easier. Path is rugged in places but nearer the top, proper steps and boardwalks make it more enjoyable with a platform at the top. Spectacular views at the top of Thirlmere and the Helvellyn range, make this a cracking walk for...
Β Β Β Read moreWe decided to climb up to Raven Crag on a beautiful day. The climb up is steep but doable with some stops along the way. It took us (2 adults, 2 teenagers and a dog) around an hour to get from bottom to top. There are some amazing views along the way and when you reach the top, you will realise that it was worth it! If you are lucky, like we were, you may even get to see the military jets fly past! If you are reading this review, you should...
