I still think Wigg island is a fantastic location to take the dogs for a walk. There are many different paths to choose from that all loop around pack to the car park in the end. There is a car park available at the beginning of the trail free of charge and there are plenty of sports available. There is a sign available that show all the times the car park closes. Along the trail is filled with trees, bushes, flowers and even a lake that you are able to explore. You might even find some hidden sculptures along the way. There are also some wildlife such as birds, rabbits and ducks along the way depending on the time of year. There are multiple large fields for dogs and children to play and it could be a great location for a picnic in the summer. My dogs absolutely love there time at Wigg island. It's a very relaxed walk and you are able to go at your own pace. There are also some fantastic photography locations along the way. I would really recommend a visit on a lovely summer's day.

A quiet hidden gem, with some unfortunate graffiti. Great views of both Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges. There is a path that goes under the Mersey Gateway and along a section of the disused canal. There's also some woodland and a grass area with bences. Car parking is free. Was relatively quiet when we visited. There is an unusual swing bridge that connects Runcorn to the island. Beware to turn left as the road forks about 1/2 mile after the bridge to reach the car park otherwise you'll end up on private land. Sadly there was some graffiti on the lookout points (see images).

While I was in Runcorn, a local told me that I should visit Wigg Island for a walk and great views of the old and new Runcorn bridges. I'd never heard of the place before, but it's definitely worth a visit. It's an island beside the river Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal, that was industrial land and now a nature reserve. You could spend up to an hour doing a circular walk around the island that passes underneath the new bridge. There's tarmaced paths, woodland walks, bird hides and a good carpark.

Wigg Island is an island in the river Mersey which is accessed via a swing bridge over the Manchester ship canal from Astmoor in Runcorn . The site was originally a chemical waste dumping ground going back many decades to the early part of the last century . During the last 30 years it has been landscaped and turned into a wildlife sanctuary and is popular amongst bird watchers and dog walkers alike . It has recently been used as an access point for work in the construction of the new Mersey crossing and was officially opened in October 2017 . To the east of the site it is possible to walk all the way through to Moore Nature reserve and in the last 5 years Otters have become resident for the first time in over 150 years as fish species and numbers have increased. Salmon have also returned to the upper reaches of the estuary along with several rare birds of prey . Wigg Island is an excellent viewing point for the new Bridge and many bird watchers use it to observe the bird life...

Wigg island is a hidden gem in a once industrial empire, with excellent dog walking tracks that wind through a truly unique wonderful shrub and woodlands, with the river Mersey on one side, and to make it a true island the man made water highway Manchester Ship Canal on the other, making it accessable by the unique swing bridge to some really good walking, rambling, dog walking, bird watching, wildlife and beautiful picnicking spots it's wheelchair friendly with good places to take a breath and break, the whole thing is perfect for any family. A truly good day out for all,oh and the views...
