Lovely place for a dog walk in the sunshine, can get windy at times. Very unusual area has a bit of a post apocalyptic feel to it, the area's vegetation is a mixture of thorny heath in pebbles and sand with various mosses and small hardy bushes that grow a yellow flower and give off an almost almondy sent in the summer, this seems to attract lots of butterflies. An abundance of wild birds of many species small pools and lakes dotted about all on a back drop of a nuclear power station, old infrastructure is scattered about the area, you may find old fishing huts with abandoned engineering for pulling out ships onto and up the beach and also old railway sidings from the building of the old part of the power station. There is a dedicated bird watching center near the golf course along the main road i've forgotten the exact name location, sorry. I believe it to have platforms and hides for the serious twitcher or long range nature photographer. In all this area could be said to be an artists paradise, ether painting or photography there is always something interesting to whiteness, perhaps the launch of coast guards large rescue vessel into an angry surf or the fishing boats bringing in the catch of the day or just some of the abandoned engineering being retaken by nature. You will find a lovely selection of very unusual artwork close to the Romney and Hythe miniature railway at the end of the line (well worth a visit with children btw), a small viewing gallery where you can visit for free and purchase artwork. The large collection of shoes washed up on the beach is always a strange and unusual sculpture. That mentioned there are some excellent eatery's and pubs in the area along with excellent farmshops, new romney potatoes are said to be of excellent flavour in season. In all well worth a visit

There is an RSPB sanctuary on the Lydd road. And Dungeness is a wonderfull remote place near the sea. Nearby is a running nuclear power station. Two light houses one in use. There is also a light steam railway station which runs a service from Hythe to Dungeness via stations at Dymchurch and steam yard at NewRomney. Dungeness has wooden fishermans huts scattered along the narrow road. Its a shingle site and beach. Beach casting fishing is done from this shore especially in Winter. Toilets. Food and drink are available at the Britannia Pub and Dungeness Light Railway Station Cafe. Both serve excellent local caught Fish served with quality chips. Note this place being remote can suffer from a lack of road care in mid winter. With biting winds from the east can freeze winter fishing lines. In summer. Its my favourite place. Channels shipping can be seen from the shore. Dungeness is found on the southern edge of Romney Marsh.

Feels like you may just have reached the end of the world. A shingle bank, the largest in Europe, that shelves steeply to the sea. Old tracks and rusting ironmongery associated with the fishinging industry which still continues. A board walk will rather bumpily carry wheel and pushchairs across the shingle to a small viewing platform. Few wild salt tolerant plants: a few salt tolerant buildings, some of which are getting Grand Design type renovations. 2 light houses, 2 pubs The Britania and The Pilot, 1 decommissioned nuclear power plant, 1 very big sky it has an austere beauty in either sunshine or rain, and always with stiff breezes to strong prevailing south westerlys. There is a single road in and out that crosses the Hythe-Dymchurch narrow gauge railway. Derek Jarman's house with poetry in relief on the side. There's nothing and everything. I just love it.

This is a bizarre beautiful place dominated by a nuclear power station! It's not everyone's "cup of tea" but it has a beauty of its own making. Rumours claim it's Britain's only desert! It is a very special place incredibly different from anywhere else I've been in the UK. Small shacks are scattered across the landscape some very OLD some very NEW architect designed beauties that you could easily pass without noticing their incredible ingenuity and subtle beauty of design. A couple of lighthouses and a life boat station even a pub and a narrow gauge steam railway that runs all the way to Hythe. There are many ruined boats and remnants of winching gear and engines lying all over the place giving an air of desolation and abandonment that is surreal. Sounds crazy but it's actually beautiful. If you're anywhere near visit it for yourself then see if you agree!

We had a weeks holiday in one of the houses on the shingle beach at Dungeness and had a wonderful time in this very unusual place. Dungeness is unique with no boundaries, a desolate landscape with wooden houses, nuclear power stations, two lighthouses, a RNLI station and expansive gravel pits. Yet it possesses a rich and diverse wildlife within the National Nature Reserve (it also encompasses the RSPB reserve) in one of the largest shingle landscapes in the world. As well as a National Nature Reserve, Dungeness is also a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation. The communities of plants and animals living at Dungeness are unique, precious and exceptionally fragile. It is home to many uncommon plants, insects and spiders and is also a great place to see migratory birds in the spring and autumn.

I grew up in this area but in my early years it was heavy industry all along the back of the coast road and around the power station with gravel extraction - it still takes place but not in the scale I remember 50yrs or so ago. This activity has created large extensive ponds which are a wildlife attraction and this activity stretches from Dungeness to the north side of camber! It still possesses an earie feel as you near the now defunct nuclear power station! As a child I can remember swimming in the sea off Greatstone, knowing the sea was warm from the use of sea water at the power station for cooling.
