I think I have been coming here since I was a kid in 1982, and it never gets old to revisit. The very basics are a beautiful riverside location with good parking and good facilties (public toilets, and the cafe.)The mill itself is lovely to see from outside, and there is a nice bridge over the river which is now pedestrians only, but which I can remember driving over!
The mill itself is fascinating - it is in full working order, and the miller will tell you as much as you want to hear about how it works. Within reason you or the kids can operate some of the controls, and you can see the wheel turn, the wheat coming down the chuts into the mil stones, the stones rotate and the flour filling the bags. The sack hoist to the hoppers in the roof space work as well.
This is an amazing place - you can see how it all works, plus if you need to ask, the miller is always around; it's very child friendly too, they can felt the grain and the flour, and nothing is too hidden away so you can't see it.
Make sure you visit the shop and buy some of the goodies there. Im eating a bacon butty with bread made from the flour milled there and...

Free parking, extremely good value entrance fee, cafe , other attractions inc light railway. Toilets and a lovely little gift shop. However the star attraction was the mill. A fantastic working Mill with friendly staff and a very informative miller/tour guide who set the mill in motion and kept us beguiled with stories and facts. Lots to see, child friendly and one of the finest examples still going of such a iconic piece of Victorian Engineering and architecture, Great history as been a mill on this site since the 13th century. Please visit and help support the upkeep of this wonderful place for future generations.
ONE TIP - Ring before going as the website was out of date with times and dates open, so we had a wasted...
Read moreDreadful!!! Came here for a day out with the children. Waited patiently in the shop to be served and buy our tickets. We were here as the pace opened and were second in the queue. The first people were dealt with by the lady on the till and then we were completely ignored. She proceeded to fill the cash register with money. We stood wondering when she was going to acknowledge us (which she never did!!!). We thought we would be served once she had filled the till but then the phone rang which she answered immediately and proceeded to give people information about visiting the mill and bread making sessions. At this point I walked out in disgust at her rudeness. I know we weren't invisible that day as we chatted with lots of people while queueing for the heatherslaw railway. Terrible customer...
