Lovely walks and lots of wildlife.
However i have removed a star as a printed sign telling people 'shh im a bat please dont disturb me' on the lead up to the campbell hide stairs to dissuade people from disturbing the pipistrelle roosting literally right above the hide door is not enough. (I literally had a man tell me "If you open the door gently you can get jn just dont shut the door all the way")
Bats are protected from disturbance by the wildlife and countryside act and a sign such as this will only encourage people to check to see if the bat is there possibly leading to flash photography thereby disturbing it. This hide path needs to be closed where it meets the road section and kept closed until the bat is no longer there.
PLEASE CLOSE THIS HIDE AND THE PATH LEADING TO IT. I've seen enough ecology reports to know that this should of been done immediately upon discovering the bat.
This aside the reserve us well worth a visit and i highly recommend the long trail walk if you like...
Read moreAccess road needs work. An extra layby or two would help for longer vehicles. Carpark at the top really too small for a motorhome. Some paths have been improved. Closes at 7.30pm. Ponds are nearly empty which suggests seasonal rainfall low. No streams but wet underfoot with just a little rain. Likely muddy in places. Lower Hide has no outdoor deck viewing area; just the hut. Could be improved. Airborne and contact viral transmission person to person possible in the hide. Picnic tables were in evidence. Walking limited to just a few trails. No cycling on site. Looked a little shabbier than last visit. Pedestrian gate to picnic area is broken and has to be lifted off the ground to open. Wild boar doing a good job digging it all up. One or two species of mushrooms growing. Modest visitor centre with notice boards. Toilets inc. accessable. Very few birds in evidence. Mainly walkers some with dogs. Usual green bags of dog poo left...
Read moreGreat little reserve situated in The Forest of Dean near Parkend. There are two mains trails and they are very easy ones to remember the short and long trail and both trails take you into the heart of the reserve where you can see Fallow Deer, Redstarts and Song Thrushes amongst other things but nonetheless they are a fabulous site to see. The woodland is also diverse from natural woodland which is absolutely spectacular amongst the springtime foliage. You can glimpse the small pools at the site which are again very picturesque to look at and again a great place to spot some wildlife. Overall this is an excellent place to visit and spot some rare and...
