Had a lovely walk to see the monument which is part of the Cleveland way. We parked at Dikes Lane at Gribdale gate. There is limited free parking, but we went quite early (8.30am) and there was plenty of spaces. The walk is quite steep, and a decent walk on gravel, rocky paths. Definitely not for anyone that could struggle going up a few flights of stairs. There are some great views along the way up, with view points to see Roseberry Topping. There are no facilities at the car park or beyond, so pack drinks and snacks. The sign posts although tell you the route for the Cleveland way are useless to get you back to the car park, so if your doing a loop , plan it before you go, or turn round and go back the way you went, or you’ll end up guessing and walk further than you planned. (Like we did) I’d like to do Roseberry topping , but it looks harder. The Wainestones is another great hike/walk.

This is a stunning section of the Cleveland Way. Admittedly, we were very lucky with the weather for early March. Most people visit Captain Cook’s Monument from the North. The path from Kildale is lovely and less frequently used, and it gives you a sense of being away from it all on the Moors. The climb is relatively gentle. It is only when you get to the monument that you suddenly get the view, and it is breathtaking. Take drinks and snacks, because there is no cafe at the top (you have to go back down to Kildale for the tea-shop). Please take all litter home and leave it pristine.

I know this must seem strange? From the age of 14 up to 19 years of age I used to climb Roseberry Topping & I have to admit I didn't always get to the Topping but I can Honestly say " The view is no matter where you are there it is without a doubt Absolutely Breathtaking & Fantastic & absolutely exhilarating"! I do Miss visiting. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I can no longer climb like I used to as I now have Arthritis in Both Hips & drive a Quingo Mobility Scooter. I suppose Next Time I am near Eston as I now live in Bristol I could take a steady attempt? I used to like the peace & tranquility. Marija Mallard....
