We were made to feel so welcome by Tony and his wife, Pat, from the moment we arrived. After a brief health and safety discussion, Tony led us into his 'lab' where he had acquired a huge collection of Victorian era experimental apparatus, some of which he had restored himself. It was like setting foot onto the film set of Boris Karloff's 'Frankenstein', such was the vast array of devices. However, these weren't merely Hollywood props - these were the real deal! Accompanied by pops, bangs and whizzes, Tony demonstrated a wide range of electromagnetic phenomena to us in an entertaining and informative style that kept us engaged and eager to learn more. If only studying O-level physics had been this engaging 40 years' ago then I'm sure I'd have done better than the grade 'C' I managed to scrape by with! After a lovely afternoon tea intermission of coffee, cakes and engaging conversation, laid on by Pat, we were once more back in the lab to be entertained and informed in equal measure for the second hour by Tony before he concluded with his pièce de résistance finale which capped off a truly memorable two hours.

What I liked most about this experience was its authenticity - not only for the Victorian era lab apparatus that Tony had meticulously collected and restored over many years, but from our hosts. Tony and Pat are genuinely nice people who made us feel incredibly welcome from the first moment we arrived. Tony's style of delivery is casual and informative with a hint (a strong hint towards the end!) of the theatrical which really made the two hours we spent in his company absolutely fly by. Pat was the consummate host at teatime, having laid on a lovely spread for us. You simply don't get this genuine, authentic experience from the anodyne, mass produced 'experiences' cynically proffered for pure profit by larger establishments nowadays - this is a gem.

Should you visit Tony and Pat? YES! Even if you're not naturally curious about Victorian era physics, I guarantee that you'll truly enjoy the experience nonetheless and come away both entertained...

I was looking for things to do while we were spending a weekend near Whitby. We like the slightly unusual and my brother who studied physics at university was with us, so it seemed like an interesting option.

You can only book by phone with the lovely Pat, who will give you directions and tempt you in with the promise of tea and cake at half time! We were intrigued and very much looking forward to our visit.

From the moment we arrived to be greeted by Tony, we were absolutely captivated. Tony has made it a lifelong labour of love to collect old pieces of scientific equipment and he has converted a room in the house to give demonstrations. I am not one with a scientific brain, but I absolutely loved it. My brother, who does have a scientific brain, absolutely loved it. Tony made it all incredibly fascinating and educational in the best way. The sort of person who is a natural and inspirational teacher that we all wish we had for every subject. We can’t recommend it highly enough,...

What a little gem!! To be welcomed into Tony and Pat's home with such warmth was lovely. The museum is a joy and clearly a labour of love very well curated by Tony who is superbly knowledgeable about the vintage and reproduction pieces of equipment he has collected. The refreshments during the interval were tasty and well accompanied by chat with both Pat and Tony. A wonderful find for any science or history buff or even if you just want to see electricity and explosions at work!! Brilliant, absolutely loved it. If school science was like this many more would take it up!!

The Museum of Victorian Science in Glaisdale, Whitby is a hidden gem. Pay a visit and you'll be warmly welcomed into Tony and Pat's home. It was one of the highlights of our holiday. There's a fascinating painting in the hallway entitled An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump Print. Thank you Tony for telling us about the painting and I ordered a canvas copy from the National Gallery :-)
