Visiting Aira Force was one of those experiences that quietly stays with you. Tucked away near Ullswater, it felt like stepping into a peaceful, green world where time slows down and nature does all the talking.
The walk up to the waterfall was just beautiful. Dappled light filtered through the trees, and the sound of the stream grew louder with every step. There's something incredibly calming about being surrounded by that kind of wild beauty – mossy rocks, towering trees, and the occasional red squirrel darting past like a secret only the forest knows.
When we finally reached the falls, I just stood there for a while, watching the water tumble down with so much force and grace. It’s not the tallest or grandest waterfall I’ve ever seen – but it has soul. The stone bridge arching above it added this lovely, almost storybook feel, and the air was so fresh it felt like a reset for my mind.
What I loved most was the sense of quiet – not just in sound, but in spirit. Even with other walkers around, it never felt crowded or rushed. It was just me, the water, and the wind through the trees.
Aira Force isn't just a place to see – it's a place to feel. Whether you're walking solo, sharing it with someone special, or just needing to reconnect with nature, it’s a little sanctuary I’d go back to in...

This isn't just a walk; it's a total sensory reset, and I easily give it five stars for being one of the most relaxing places I've ever visited. The atmosphere here is absolutely restorative. From the moment you step onto the path, you are instantly surrounded by lush, beautiful nature. It truly feels amazing to be completely immersed. The towering, ancient trees create a canopy that feels almost cathedral-like, and the air is clean and cool. The star, of course, is the magnificent waterfall. The sheer power of the water cascading down is incredible, yet the persistent, rushing sound is strangely soothing and stress-melting. Following the network of paths and charming bridges allows you to appreciate the beautiful streams that feed into the main fall. The constant sound of the water and the sight of the vibrant green foliage make this the ultimate peaceful retreat. If you need to recharge and connect with the wild beauty of the Lake District, make the short, beautiful journey to Aira Force. It’s an unforgettable experience of peace and...
Read moreA fabulous natural set of waterfalls maintained with care by our National Trust. These are free to access. There is a good sized carpark at the Ullswater end of the falls if you need to travel by car and if your are a NT member it is free. There are additional carparks on the road (A5091) which give easy access to the falls higher up from Ullswater. You can walk from Glenridding with little or no road walking and of course there are a few decent fell paths too. You need to have decent mobility to explore all of the falls and if your are able it is certainly worth it. A good spot for a picnic with family and on some days you might find an icecream van parked up close by 😋. It will probably take at least 1hr to explore the range of falls provided you don't stop for rests or just enjoying the views. My attached pic is Ullswater from the bottom...
