This is an absolutely sensational and magnificent Castle situated in the middle of the Picturesque Dumfries and Galloway countryside and it's backdrop against the Lowther Hills make it all the more. The architecture of the Castle is stunning and exceptional made of Pink Sandstone and has coined the phrase 'The Pink Palace' which is very apt for it and also the Castle was built between 1679 and 1691 and is amazing that is fully intact after all this time, which is absolutely fantastic. Visits to the inside of the Castle are guided tour only on select dates throughout the tourist season between April and October so it is absolutely advised to check the website to find out these dates to avoid any disappointment and make the most of such a wonderful and fantastic place. The Shop is also open in conjunction with the Castle on selected dates and again best advised to check the dates on the website. The tours themselves last 75 minutes and are are run on select times on selected dates listed but when you do get on those tours they are thoroughly fascinating and informative about the history of the Montagu-Douglas-Stuart and how they obtained the titles of Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury. The other great thing about the tours is that the guides deliver the right amount of information without overloading with too much information and use the reference points of the beautiful family portraits inside as useful way of understanding things and piecing it together allowing to obtain a full picture of the history of the family. The Castle itself is full of treasures with the portraits of the Family so outstanding and having wonderful almost realistic detail to them and the furniture in a lot of the rooms so breathtaking and in amazing condition. There is interesting things about the links the place has to Neil Armstrong the first man on the moon and also the links the first Duke of Buccleuch had to King Charles II. The best of the paintings is the Rembrandt painting of the Old Woman reading a book as the detail is just exquisite and beautifully breathtaking. There is no photography allowed in the Castle due to it being a working family home. The gardens themselves are just as breathtaking as The Castle with the Shawl having a wonderful Italian Style to it and there is a spectacular array of colour from the border flowers as well. The Rose Garden is also beautiful with the different colours of Roses on display leaving with a great inspired feeling and The Duchess Garden has a wonderful array of colour. The Stand out features though from the gardens has to be The Woodland Garden due to the breathtaking display of Azaleas and Rhododendrons as the array of colour is so spectacular and amazing and there is a wonderful transition of colour from the different coloured Azaleas and Rhododendrons. The Gardens also offer beautiful views back towards the Castle where you further marvel at the outstanding architecture. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of walks around the estate where you can see the oldest Sycamore Tree in Britain and also enjoy the lovely picturesque views of the Lowther Hills to the East. There are cafes in the Gardens and near the Castle offering a variety of food at reasonable prices and also The Gift Shop sells a nice range of gifts at reasonable affordable prices. Overall this is a spectacular and enjoyable day out to one of the best Castles in Southern Scotland and The Castle has probably one of the building architectures of any Castle in Scotland. Definitely well a worth a visit whilst in the Dumfries and Galloway area you will not be...

RE: Our recent visit to Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens

We have visited lots of Castles and stately homes and been on many tours. Drumlanrig Castle is the best and my favourite.

First class, excellent service from beginning to end. The staff are excellent and welcome you as a guest, creating an ambiance of relaxation and comfort.

The drive up to Drumlanrig Castle is truly extraordinary iridescent. The baroque staircase and dining room are amazing and would be excellent for a wedding setting. The Castle estate and grounds are a true delight, they are beautiful and well maintained by the gardener's, the range and colours of the trees and plants are fantastic. The walks around the estate are easily accessible and beautiful. There are zoned areas and facilities for the children of a large play park and we stopped on our walk at the Larchwood Cabin Cafe for a coffee. We embarked on a guided tour with David whom explained all about the history of the castle and the families of Douglas, Montagu and Scott. David answered all of our queries and gave us an insight into the history of Scotland and Drumlanrig Castle and the surrounding area. David furnished my sister in law with water to quench her thirst. The tour was excellent and we were truly welcomed as guests, as Drumlanrig Castle has a very homely feeling about it. After our tour we ventured into the Castle tearoom for lunch and the food and service was absolutely first class, again the homely feeling continued and we were welcomed as guests of the house.

I will return to Drumlanrig Castle as there is something for everyone here and a feeling of relaxation and comfort as you are not a visitor, you are a welcomed as a guest.

Thank you to all the...

A superb castle, gardens and tearoom, run by friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. Amazing castle tour by Gwen B, lasting 85 minutes enabled us to see 13 of the 85+ rooms in the 1679-built castle-cum-mansion. 2 and a half hours spent in the garden, but this was rushed as we had a Sunday Roast booking at the onsite Castle Tearoom. Could really spend 3-4 hours to enjoy the gardens at a relaxed, fulfilling rate. The morning cafe visit (0930hrs onwards), where we were welcomed by Abby L, was a good experience, lots of baking choices, and so we opted for the (tasty) scone with jam and clotted cream option (£3.50) (made by Betty Cook, 39 years service I understand) and a delicious Edinburgh Coffee Company Americano (£3.25). Later on, the Sunday roast (£14.95), where I must add that I'm truly surprised that there are no reviews commenting on such offering (therefore we took a risk, ... that paid off), was exquisite - we had booked about a month in advance (by email). Top notch quality, a full plate of deliciousness, cooked to perfection (Beef Brisket (changes weekly), with roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, cauliflower and broccoli cheese, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire pudding, bacon colcannon and meaty gravy). Overall a fulfilling (7-hour) day that provided complete satisfaction with our Historic Houses membership. Well done to the Drumlanrig team.

What a beautiful place reached by an approx 75 min drive down M74 from Glasgow.40 acres of Victorian gardens surround the late 17th century castle home of the Douglas family, titled dukes of Queensberry and Buccleuch.Today, the gardens were a blaze of colour. On one side, the estate is bordered by the Marr Burn with its small rustic bridge, facing the centrepiece shawl garden. The castle sits on a promontory with commanding views of the estate. Directly below is the 7 m high long border wall. There are many walking trails which although perfectly suitable for us more elderly challenged folks, may be problematic distance wise. Many areas have no rest seats. The tearoom is excellent. Great menu and helpful, friendly staff and reasonable prices. It was £7 entry for pensioners, outside areas only.Gardens close at 4pm.
