Visiting the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Nestled in the heart of Somerset, this area offers a perfect blend of dramatic natural landscapes, fascinating history, and outdoor adventure.
Cheddar Gorge itself is truly one of Englandâs most stunning natural landmarks. The towering limestone cliffs, winding road, and panoramic views from the cliff-top walks are simply unforgettable. Whether you're an avid hiker or just someone who enjoys a scenic stroll, the trails around the gorge offer something for everyone. The walk to the top is well worth the effortâonce there, youâre rewarded with sweeping views across the Somerset Levels and beyond.
The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is equally captivating. Rolling hills, charming countryside, and hidden caves make this a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike. Thereâs a peacefulness here that feels like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Cheddar village itself is full of character, with its quaint shops, cozy cafĂŠs, and of course, the famous Cheddar cheese tasting opportunities. Donât miss the chance to explore the cavesâGoughâs Cave and Coxâs Cave are both fascinating and full of prehistoric history.
Whether you're here for a day trip or a longer stay, the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge provide an unforgettable experience. Itâs a perfect destination for families, couples, or solo adventurers. Highly recommended for anyone looking to reconnect with nature and discover one of the UKâs most iconic landscapes.
Parking can be found either in the village or around the winding main road, payment necessary, toilets can also be found in the main village free of charge. I would recommend taking a good pair of boots and plenty of water- theres lots of uneven ground with plenty of opportunities for slips, trips and falls. Well worth the danger though. You do not need to purchase tickets to explore the hills as they can be accessed at many different points, but would recommend planning a route or having some familiarity with the area and different possible routes. I would also recommend buying tickets to the cave etc to enter through Jacobs ladder and do the 3 mile circular hike, but as stated, this isnât necessary if you dont want to.
I was lucky enough to be Engaged on the top of one of those beautiful mountain cliff tops, and would suggest anyone in love with someone who also enjoys spending some precious 1-1 time together in nature do the same. Proud to say âYES!â with the goats and...

Read moreThe nicest area in the UK I have been to so far (I haven't seen a huge amount to be honest) and the walk is fantastic walking up and down both sides of the Cheddar Gorge. It took around 3-4 hours to do a full trip with a quick lunch break half way through with some breathers. It is a very nice and relaxing morning or afternoon depending on when you go. The views are spectacular as you can see by the pictures I have taken or anyone else's really. Its a fantastic place to come to.
Inside the Cheddar Gorge you can purchase tickets to walk around the carvings and natural internal tunnels. Its another nice touch to a great dday. THat ticket also includes other attractions too. You can find out that information out on...
