What a strange place we came upon, on a day out in August this year. The sign for "Penjerrick Garden" suggested to us a pleasant place to go for a stroll - imagining tidy green lawns and flower beds, a picnic bench and maybe some cobbled paths. What we found was not so much a garden however, as an unexpected jungle trek through the Cornish countryside. There is a lawn near the house, but if flowers grow there they were mostly over when we arrived (asides from the hydrangeas and a few wild roses), the benches are mossy and decaying and the tracks partly hidden and uneven. Despite this not being the tranquil, quintessentially Cornish garden experience we had envisioned, we were not unhappy with our visit. It was fun for the afternoon, pretending to be jungle explorers, stumbling along craggy paths, battling overgrown bramble and ferns, and navigating paths around silt filled ponds. If you are visiting this place I'd recommend good hiking shoes and a walking stick! In parts it is very wild and overgrown, boggy in some spots and rocky in others. A stick comes in handy for holding back the bushes to pass through some sections. The laminated map at the entrance was useful but sadly we could not locate the honesty box, so were unable to leave a donation. We recommend a visit to this place, it's one of those rare, very much off the beaten path bits of Cornwall that surprise and delight - even if the name of the place is...
Read moreReally fascinating garden with amazing plant specimens including some of the tallest tree ferns in the country and a beautiful Wollemi Pine.
The footbridge between the upper and lower garden is currently broken (rotten on far side and will eventually collapse), so use the gate to cross the road. There is hazard tape on the bridge but it looked like someone had pushed through it when we visited - I wouldn't recommend this, as falling from height in rural Cornwall when the bridge does give way probably won't go so well!
Paths in the lower garden are tricky to navigate but it's worth exploring this jungley wilderness if you are sure-footed and don't mind a bit of mud and pushing through foliage. We visited at the end of a pretty dry summer so the mud situation was perhaps more manageable than it could have otherwise been, but I could see it being very difficult in the lower garden at some times of year.
I really hope this garden gets the care and support it needs to continue long-term, as it really is a...
Read moreA real shame and disappointment for what could have been a slice of incredible heaven. I love wild, I hate commercial tourist places but this was just so unkept it may as well have been derelict. We were so excited for the secret ponds only to be met with stagnant silt patches after trapesing through overgrown hedges with barely visible paths. Arrows / signage fallen and broken and unclear. Paper Map and info was only helpful if you really knew your plants/trees. I really wanted to love this place but in its current state I would not recommend at all :( needs lots of maintenance. Pictures must be...
