I wish I could give this 3.5 stars, I feel 3 is too low and 4 is too high. Context: stayed in Richard Burton glamping pod. Pro’s:

  1. owner is absolutely lovely with a cracking personality, instantly made us feel welcome and checked we had everything we needed.
  2. outdoor area next to the pod was lush, had a picnic bench, a fire pit, pergola - everything you need for a classic summer night around the fire.
  3. We had a lovely night overall, and the ÂŁ60 for the pod was worth the experience we had with the outdoor area with the lovely surroundings.

However.. We did leave in the middle of the night and didn’t get to use the pod over night as intended. The cons:

  1. The pod itself and the general facilities need a massive clean, a proper power wash, hoover, dust, mop etc. The floor in the pod was dirty and there were cobwebs throughout, I’m a massive arachnophobe so was terrified that I’d wake up to a massive spider on my face and couldn’t settle. (I know spiders are to be expected when camping/glamping but this could be minimised if kept clean and cobwebs were removed frequently)
  2. The pod had a stale smell, it needed a good air out and an overall clean. The bed was comfy and I was told that it had recently had a new mattress, we just could not rest because of not feeling comfortable in our surroundings, it’s £60 a night so fairly cheap but had the pod been cleaner and smelt better, we would have rested better and felt more settled.

It has a lot of potential, great location with good bones, just needs to be maintained better. The toilets also needed a massive power wash, the amount of cobwebs around this place is crazy. Again, the place is in the wild so nature is expected, but if cleaned regularly this can be kept on top of.

Anyway, would we come again? Likely yes, but in our own tent. They just need to have a massive clean of the whole place and it would make the world of difference.

Thanks for a lovely evening though, the bbq and campfire songs are one for the...

This was my third trip to Red Rock, with 2 of my great nieces (11 and 13 years old respectively) and their parents, as they graduated from my bushcraft and survival course. Mari has been an amazing host, always checking up on us and making sure that we were settled in, as well as giving us plenty of local knowledge on places to visit. She provides a bucket of wood for ÂŁ5 (a bargain!). The wooded area is perfect for small tents and bashas/tarps. Throughout winter and into spring, the wood has been firm and well drained and we slept on the floor, under a basha without getting wet, even though on one occassion we had 12 hours of constant rain. We booked all 4 clamping pods, so I had a good nose around all of them. They come with a double sofa bed and 2 kids sleeping mats, also a small gas cooker and a water container, along with a power pack with built in torch. There were also a couple of coffee sachets and a kettle to place on the gas burner. Portaloos were clean and there is also a proper toilet, shower and washing up facilities in the cabin at the hardstanding area., Unfortunately, some guests don't always leave the facilities as they find them, so expect to find the odd loo roll on the floor or portaloo unflushed! This is a guest issue and not a host issue, although it didn't cause us any problem. This is a great wild campsite with basic facilities that will appeal to anyone wanting to escape from the formalities and distractions of the usual landscaped and manicured campsites around the UK. Perfect to let kids get muddy as they explore the stream, woods, zipwire and local flora and fauna, meeting new friends along the way. Really quiet at night and a good dark sky if you're interested in astral photography. Highly recommended...

I can only support the negative CNOWOLF review from a couple of days ago. Yes, we requested a cancellation and received a response "are you for real?" and other unquotable words. The attitude shocked us and the owner still tries to teach other people manners..? 🙃 We were not happy about the communication and confirmed that we wish the booking to be cancelled after which we got two one-word responses "Cancelled" and "Goodbye". Well then we enquired about a refund and only then we were told that this is not possible because cancellation is made on the day of arrival. Why not explain this to a customer politely beforehand? We would have accepted this. Anyway we ended up arriving to the campsite in the evening to join our friends as we were in the area and weather wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. We didn't see owner around. I cannot say anything about the wild camping area as we didn't go there but the tent campsite (i.e. the field with tall grass) looked very neglected. The container with one shower, two toilets and one sink looked absolutely disgusting. Everything was covered in spider webs, with alive and dead spiders and hundreds of other insects everywhere! You could tell that the toilets were not cleaned not just that weekend, but in weeks. Yes, there was some toilet paper and hand soap in there, and obviously I wouldn't expect anything luxurious from a wild campsite but keeping the washing facilities at least moderately clean should be a must when you are charging £12 per person. It was a bad...

Great location, lovely friendly owner. My constructive criticism is that it would be great if the hardstanding areas could do with a bit of work done. The area we were on was brilliantly located at the top of the site but could be improved: 1. Upper toilets are cold, aged and no hot water/showers - it would be great if there was another nice container setup with showers and washing up facilities like down at the bottom hardstanding (which is a long walk away, so not practical when camped at the top) 2. Some extra gravel to cover the soggy grass among the rubble/hardcore base - took some maneuvering to park with door stepping onto gravel. 3. Some simple stairs leading straight down to the upper toilet block (rather than having to walk down around and down the gravel track; the grass/rubble bank is not safe esp in the dark) 4. Made a bit more level/individual flat pitches Then would be happy to pay much more to stay here! That said we did enjoy our stay and especially the fact we were the only ones on the top field. Great access to Margam Park especially if you're heading in to ride bikes; there's access directly to the MTB trail area, at the end of the road. The pods and forest area looked really lovely. If you're looking at that area, don't hesitate!

Stayed here in November and it was wonderful! Likes: excellent host, wonderful welcome upon arrival and everything was explained to us perfectly. Since this is a “wild camping” site she did inform us there wouldn’t be many amenities. Which was absolutely to be expected however the toilet and shower block was lovely! We went for a girls trip there was 4 of us and we had an absolutely blast. Even when my car got stuck on the feild in the morning (camping mid November in the rain what do we expect) it was hilarious and we all found it funny. Dislikes: the only one thing is the porta potty. I would have preferred to have just walked to the toilet block. We stayed in the miss talbot pod with a pitch up next to it. I think it’s a general porta potty thing but they just aren’t pleasant at all. DEFINITELY coming again. Actually writing this as booking my next trip. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to experience “wild camping”. Very affordable and worthwhile!
