Smoo Cave is one of the most unique and fascinating natural attractions in the Scottish Highlands. Located near Durness along the NC500 route, this massive sea cave offers a stunning blend of geology, history, and natural beauty. The walk down to the cave is scenic, with dramatic coastal views and well-maintained steps and pathways.
The cave itself is enormous, with a cathedral-like entrance carved by the sea. Inside, you’ll find a freshwater waterfall crashing into a deep pool—truly a magical sight. Entry to the cave is free, and there's informative signage explaining how the cave was formed by both freshwater and seawater erosion over thousands of years.
If you get the chance, the guided tour inside the inner chambers is well worth it. The guides are knowledgeable and passionate, giving you a deeper understanding of the cave’s structure, myths, and mysteries. The tour is relatively short but very engaging, and you even get a small boat ride deeper into the cave (subject to weather and water levels).
There’s a small car park nearby, and it's just a short walk to the cave. The entire area is peaceful and full of photo opportunities—perfect for anyone who loves nature, photography, or adventure. Whether you’re passing through or spending time in the area, Smoo Cave is a must-visit and one of the highlights of...
Read moreI liked the cave overall but it was not open and the sad part was they did not mention it on the page as per the months they are open and working was till octobar but it was closed from 1st august till 5th of august . Called them on the number they provided but you only get to hear the answering machine which was a bummer . 😔 I mean no other way to ask them or contact them unfirtunately . This process wasted my day as i stayed there to get the cave tour after visiting the hiking area around . . But you can see the waterfall inside the cave which is astonishing ... The surrounding area has a beautifull sea which is connected with the cave . The sea connects arctic and atlantic oceans and just opposite to the sea you can see the cave . There are wooden steps to go downstairs to the cave . And then some more stairs to go on the top side by side with the sea 🥰😍 which is a mesmerising experience . You can walk around see the view of the sea . Overall beautifull and heavenly scenic views no one can get it other than...

Wow — the scenery around Smoo Cave is something else. The cave itself is huge and dramatic, carved into the cliffs with a waterfall inside that you can hear before you even get there. It’s definitely a popular spot, so expect a fair few people around, and the cave does feel a bit commercialised now, but it's still really impressive to see.
There’s a free car park with public toilets, which makes it a convenient stop. The path down to the cave is a bit of a trek, especially on the way back up, but it’s not too difficult and totally worth the effort for the views alone.
The cove beside the cave is beautiful, with cliffs, wild edges, and crashing waves — it all adds to the magic of the place. I wish we could have gone further into the cave itself to explore more, but even just walking around the area gives you a good feel for how special it is.
A great stop along the north coast — dramatic, wild, and full...
