My Visit to The Macallan Distillery – A Disappointing Experience
On 30 May 2025, I visited the renowned Macallan Distillery in Speyside. Earlier that day, we were informed that the distillery would be exceptionally open from 17:00 to 22:00 due to special circumstances, with both the shop and bar accessible during that time. Based on this information, we planned our visit accordingly.
Upon arrival, our first impression was excellent. The distillery’s architecture is undeniably impressive—modern, sustainable, and harmoniously integrated into the surrounding Speyside landscape. It’s a visual testament to Macallan’s prestige and attention to detail.
Unfortunately, that positive impression quickly gave way to disappointment. Upon entering the reception area, we were met not with a warm welcome, but with an abrupt and discourteous approach from one of the stewards. Rather than a greeting, we were confronted with a list of prohibitions and restrictions, setting an unwelcoming tone.
When I politely asked if I could briefly visit the shop, I was met with a condescending question: “What do you want to buy?” The implication that access to the shop might depend on my purchasing intentions or budget was not only unprofessional, but frankly insulting.
To make matters worse, the visibly animated stewards found it necessary to slowly follow us through the entrance hall while exchanging exaggerated smirks and laughs. This behavior felt not only inappropriate but also deliberately mocking, further adding to the uncomfortable atmosphere.
It soon became clear that, contrary to the earlier information, access to the distillery—including the shop and bar—was restricted without a prior reservation. This rigid policy, which has been criticized by others in the past, felt particularly frustrating given the exceptional opening hours that had been communicated earlier in the day.
We had hoped at the very least to enjoy a visit to the shop or bar, but were denied access entirely. The lack of flexibility and inconsistent communication left us feeling disappointed and unwelcome—an experience at odds with Macallan’s global reputation for luxury and hospitality.
While the distillery’s design and whisky are undeniably world-class, our visit was marred by poor customer service, inappropriate staff behavior, and unclear policies. I strongly recommend that future visitors seek out precise and up-to-date information and secure reservations well in advance to avoid a similarly...

You can't just stop by for a dram. You have to have an appointment, your car needs to be registered to get into the parking lot.
Very opulent. Very posh. You are greeted at the gate. You are greeted at the front door. Uniformed staff. It's very pretty and "up to date".
There is a glass wall of almost everything Macallan has produced over the years. Very impressive.
We did the oak tasting at the upstairs bar. We could see the stills through a tall glass window. Our guide was a very pretty young lady who did an amazing job of walking us through 4 different drams and she was very well versed and knowledgeable. She answered all our questions. She deserves 6 stars.
Macallan is definitely going after the high end market and they make you feel like it's an experience of a lifetime. You should feel special just being there.
But unfortunately I have to say I came away a bit disappointed.
It was almost like I was expecting to meet an old friend, but discovered my old friend had passed in 2017. Instead of a happy reunion, I was respectfully greeted by a descendant. One with a slightly different ideology.
The building on the bottle has been replaced with a massive underground sod house for a very green carbon footprint. New, modern. I get it.
I was mostly disappointed in their shop. Oh, it makes you think you are shopping in a very high end boutique with space product placement. Tell them what you want, they will get it for you. If you have to ask how much, you probably can't afford it. But it seemed like a small product selection. I either had it, or no way in hell could I afford it. I was surprised at some of the prices. The enigma was 50£ cheaper at duty free at the airport. I'm glad I bought it before I came.
I understand they are going for the snob appeal. I hope it works for them. Personally we found it off putting.
I now understand the reaction of several locals, when I excitedly told them we were going to Macallan, and their reply was a simple but polite, "Oh, ok."
If you are a big fan of Macallan, then yes, you should go.
But I don't think I will ever feel the...
Read moreMy review (2023) is a mixed bag as I love this brand as an investment. Every year I make the 4 hour journey to the estate to pick up a bottle of the 18 year old, Cherry cask edition of that year for my collection. Firstly, in 3 years the bottling has went up £60. How can you justify that? Today I was not permitted entry to the boutique as I hadn't made a prior booking. Unbelievable to think that they are turning tourists away because they haven't booked a slot before arriving in Scotland. Luckily for me, the guy who originally didn't permit me access, made a call to which I was eventually granted access to the shop. I purchased my whisky, spend hundreds of pounds, and was out of there within 10 minutes. Not a very good experience after a 4 hour journey, im really disappointed. All that said, the people who work at the distillery are lovely. As was the Gentleman who originally denied me access. The distillery is a sight to behold, unlike any distillery that I've ever seen. So whisky lovers, before you make the long perilous trip to the estate, make sure you have made an appointment prior to arriving. If you are having a short stay in Scotland, be prepared to be disappointed as you wont get near the estate. There are other welcoming distilleries in the area that are lovely if you do find yourself disappointed. They'll be happy to take your money without a sing song.
A couple of years (almost) and I'm back with an improved review. Every year as I previously started I pick up a bottle of whisky from the boutique. I drove up on Saturday to pick up my 6th bottle for my collection. This time I booked my visit and I was really surprised how much I enjoyed my hour there. Erika who took us through the boutique was brilliant and really informative. She was really knowledgeable in the Macallan brand and helpful with our questions. Erika also got me a lovely cup of complimentary coffee which was nice after a long drive. I left feeling really good and that the long trip was worth it. I highly recommend that you pay them a visit. Sadly I took the long road home. I will learn from this mistake...
