Probably the most difficult to get to lake in the Lake District but worth the effort. Wastwater is England's deepest inland body of water at 280ft & at its head sits England's highest peak, Scafell Pike.

The Lake has a foreboding quality as it sits in shadow for most of the year with the steep Screes forming a thousand foot wall to its southern shore. Other than on its Western end Wastwater is surrounded by impressive, steep mountains.

The road along the side of the lake is thin with passing places. If you're not familiar with these type of roads please don't park in what you may think are parking places because they're not for that. There are a few places to park along the shore but in summer you'll be lucky to find a spot. About half way down the lake (heading towards Wasdale Head) is a car park surrounded by trees. Easy to miss. Parking here would allow you unlimited time to explore the area around the lake or head up into the mountains to the east. The car park is at the foot of the mountain Yewbarrow. It's an honour car park & you can leave a donation for its upkeep in a small box by the entrance.

Following Wastwater to its conclusion will take you to the Wasdale Head Inn. Just before the inn there's a large area where parking is possible. From there you have direct access to England's highest peaks.

TIP: If approaching Wasdale from the South Lakes head along the A595 to Wicham then follow the A595 to the turning to Wasdale Head near Holmrook Service Station. Come out the same way. Google Maps likes to take you on what it thinks is the quickest route but it isn't. The app will direct you down really bad, very thin lanes so I suggest setting Wicham as a waypoint, which keeps you on the very well...

We loved our visit to Wast Water, the views are just stunning! Plenty to do for families - we saw families paddling and swimming or you could try your hand at canoeing if you fancy it! We visited at the end of the summer holidays and it was pretty busy but there were still plenty of places to sit and have a picnic, if you wanted to. There is no car park but you can pull alongside the side of the road and park for free, or you could go on a bit further and use the National Trust car park at Wasdale Head (best car park if you're planning on getting to Scafell Pike). Bear in mind, there is a parking charge , unless you're a National Trust member and then you can park for free but make sure you validate your parking with your membership card. There are staff onsite to help with any queries. There are no shops, cafe or toilets at Wast Water but as with the car park at Wasdale Head , if you park there, you will find a small shop too, that did have a few sandwiches etc, mainly as there is a campsite too, so it's handy having that for anything you may have forgotten or run out of. There are toilets here too but we arrived just as the septic tank was being emptied and it was pretty revolting! But I'm sure it's fine most other times! Wast Water is an absolutely stunning place to visit, and if you're looking for spectacular views, then this place is an...

Scafell pike. Bez kartes kapjot nomaldījamies no ceļa un tumsā nācās rāpties 6 stundas lejā pa klintim kur normaliem cilvēkiem būtu nepieciešams alpinisma ekipejums. Ļoti iesaku iegadaties kati pirms kapt. Sekot akmeņu makslīgi sakrautām čupiņām un ja no vienas nevar redzēt nākamo doties atpakaļ. Un darīt to dienas gaišā laikā. Izgājām karstā laikā 28°C 5.40pm no stavlaukuma. Un 3.45am no rīta bijām atpakaļ stāvlaukumā. Kapjot kalnā pa Toad How pusi. Devāmies uz to pusi.

Beyond words this place is magical and one of my most favourite places to go... The sunrise over the mountain tops the water is Cristal clear like cean fresh mountain spring water ( also dont taste to bad ) you can just feel the carm in the location with god like size mountains around all sides of you its a fantastic swim summer or winter ❄️ free camping and parking 🅿️ but limited slots never seen anyone fishing so that one less worry about getting tangled in line or hooks also a great place to hike mountains 🏔️ also a campervan and camping site right down at the bottom.. not badly priced for the location ( Just at the right time when the wind dies down and the lake water is still it looks like glass reflection of the mountain 🏔️ )
