I used to walk the dog here 3-4 times a week, but this was the first time since the heavy logging in 2019. Even though I understand the need for it, I have to say I was saddened at the change. Apart from feeling thin (which you’d expect), there is quite a lot of collateral damage from machines, and many of my favourite more hidden paths and areas are blocked by unused felled trees or have simply been destroyed altogether, particularly a previously beautiful spot at the north edge with a badger set. In years, there may well be another change for the better, particularly in areas where sunlight can now reach the ground. Right now though, it just makes me feel a bit sad.

The new bins at the car park are...

One of the best woods we have walked around. It actually has standing trees and looks like a woodland.

There are main paths and a few off the beaten track paths.

Cyclists and horse riders are asked to stick to the main paths. Walkers and their dogs are welcome to the off the beaten track paths.

Parking has been provided and one is required to pay for this service. Three fee structures available: 1hr £1.50 4hrs £3 All day £5

Dog poo and litter bin is at the entrance of the woods.

The entry space is large enough to fit a horse making it easily accessible for those with...

I walk my 5 dogs here most mornings and I absolutely love it here. It's small and has no facilities but is plenty big enough for a couple hours walking. There's a car park, a bin and that's it so bring your own water and poo bags. There is a gritty forestry commision path through the centre so you can push pushchairs and wheelchairs through the main section if you don't mind the mud. Off track there's a variety of deer tracks that meander through the bracken. Expect to need walking boots or wellies though as it's...

What a beautiful place to go, so calming and quiet. Just stood and listened to all the wildlife. The dogs loved being let off the lead, met plenty of other walkers with their dogs who were also off lead. Made for a pleasant walk as spoke to other walkers. The paths were quite level which made for an easy stroll. Need more bins for rubbish/poo bags, but we took ours back to the car park where there was a bin.

Ideal place for a tranquil walk & lots of easy accessible soft paths to explore. Great walk to do with kids & for walking dogs. Mainly pine trees, ferns & rhododendron in the woods. There is a small car park. Had a little trouble finding it with using postcode yo19 6bg on sat nav. Used Google maps Broadway high car park (off wheldrake lane) to find it. No toilets or cafe/food facilities.

Really lovely wood, and quite close to York. Don't follow Google maps though, or you'll find yourself at a golf course! Head into Wheldrake village instead, turn left after the tea shop, and left again just before the school. Follow the single track road and you'll find the car park. Enjoy!
