I parked at the village green in Dirleton and walked down the lane past the church, to the footpath across the fields, following the instructions in my "Pathfinder" Edinburgh and Lothians Walks book. The attached satellite map (photo 3) shows the route to Yellowcraig beach, marked in red dots. It's a very pleasant easy flat walk, with lovely scenery looking out onto the sea at Yellowcraig dunes. See the photos. Part of the route goes through the copse of woodland - watch out for the weird bent tree that grew up for a bit, then got fed up and grew back down before deciding it had better grow up again. (photo 1). The beach is very attractive; good for young children. There is a playpark near the pay car park at Yellowcraig plantation - and on the second time I did this lovely walk I returned via the tarmac track from there to Dirleton, making it a spur and loop walk, Length around 6 miles (roughly three each way if you walk either eastwards on the sand, or westwards around to the rocky shore). I did the walk in 2 hours but if you want to linger or take photos maybe allow 2-3 hours. Take your camera, and go on a sunny day. I'd give it 4 and a half stars; it's not the best walk I've ever done but it's...
Read moreThis is a simply fabulous spot. Car park is located but a few minutes walk from the beach and toilet facilities are on hand too (and were clean when visited!). An extra bonus us that outside showers are available for those who don't wish to trapse sand into their cars. From the car park are a number of trails leading to both the beach and into the forest. A small adventure playground is 2 minutes from the parking area and ideal for younger children. The beach itself is fantastic, both soft sand and some pebbly bits. But all the beach was very clean and fabulous views across the firth of Forth. Just enough people on the beach to make it interesting but not feel crowded. Dog friendly too. Well worth a visit. Easy for young families and larger groups or simply for those taking a...
Read morePerfect sandy beach with amazing views. Accessed from the lovely village of Dirleton, Yellowcraig has plenty for everyone. There is pay and display parking, £2 gives access to all east Lothian coastal car parks for the day. Toilets are available in the car park with dog drinking bowls and a tap outside. There is a separate dog walkers path down to the beach too. Adjacent to the car park is a decent children's play park. A short walk to the beach passes a designated BBQ area which is bookable with the council. Sitting out in the Forth is the island of Fidra with a prominent light house. This is home to a large colony of Puffins and is said to have been the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevensons Treasure Island. Further East there are views to Bass rock, North Berwick and...
