Surprisingly well equipped for a quarry museum and Hadrians wall tour point. The place was closed when we stopped here in February, but the toilets were open and cleaned first thing in the morning, the cold air hand dryers were impressive but unused after one attempt, I dried them on my pants. Round the back of the building is a cycle repair station with tools and a high pressure manual air pump, a charge point, a couple of wall sockets and a picnic table all under cover. There was work in progress during our visit laying tarmac footpaths so good for wheelchair access now to some areas, most would still be still be difficult to say the least, in February. We went up to the top of the quarry to look at the wall up there it’s a steep walk up uneven muddy terrain and my arthritis made the return difficult and painful but it was worth it for the view and the relatively intact stretch of wall up there. We paid £10 and stopped overnight as we arrived late afternoon and couldn’t see it all before dark, there are a number of sign posted walks around the area. The parking is £1 an hour if you’re here for a short period and the meter...
Read moreWalltown Quarry and Craggs is a small country park based around a redundant Whinstone quarry, with a lake (in normal weather!), a Northumberland National Park Office, a paying car park (no cash, just card) and toilets (during business hours only). A bus service (the AD55) runs between the main sites of interest along the B6318, the Military Road, which is the most popular stretch of the Wall. It runs during the peak tourist season, from Easter to September, so the main sites can be visited easily from Housesteads, Vindolanda, the Roman Wall Visitor Centre, The Sill, and the other Roman sites. Walltown is a very interesting and special place to visit, especially in fine weather, but be prepared for changeable weather and wind, as the path leads you around a lake and up hill to the Wall itself (note:steep in parts). Extensive views south to Cross Fell, in the Pennines near Penrith, and, to the north, across the moorlands of west Northumberland. Walkers can continue their walk to Housesteads, about 8 miles to the east, along some difficult...
Read moreI recently visited Walltown Quarry Country Park and was blown away by the stunning views it offers. In fact, the views are some of the best I've ever seen, making it an ideal spot for those looking to take in some breathtaking scenery. The park is also a great place to get up close and personal with Hadrian's Wall, with the wall easily visible from several vantage points. Whether you're looking for a relaxing stroll or a thrilling hike, Walltown Quarry Country Park has something for everyone, including families with kids and even dogs. The staff are friendly and helpful, and it's easy to see why this spot is considered one of the best places to see Hadrian's Wall. Just be aware that the park is quite hilly, and you'll need good weather to truly appreciate all it has to offer. Overall, I highly recommend Walltown Quarry Country Park to anyone...
