Read moreThis was an absolutely wonderful zoo to visit! Me and my partner went for a zoo experience they provide to get close with a skunk, raccoon and feed racoon dogs, so as part of that day we got to look round the zoo first. They have a car park but it is tiny and hard to maneuver in, as we learnt if you don't get there when the zoo opens at 10am you won't get a spot, we arrived at 10:30am. They do have an overflow car park just down from the main car park, closer to the entrance as you drive in, and that overflow car park is massive. Like I said we arrived at 10:30am and it wasn't at all that busy, it took us a couple hours to walk round the zoo and look at the animals and by the time we got back to the entrance to have some lunch the zoo have definitely got quite busy, so I'd recommend arriving when the zoo opens. We did go during the school holidays so that probably didn't help. You are provided with a map on entry which does make it easier to work out where your going as there is lots of different areas, but there are also big maps displayed throughout the park. Near the entrance you have a picnic area and play area for kids, with toilets, beside that was a food shop, it wasn't the cheapest or the tastiest of food but it wasn't too bad, I'd still recommend bringing your own food though. There was also a gift shops to the left. I believe there are some more toilets about halfway into the zoo as well, saving you having to walk all the way back. One thing I was happy to see was detailed information boards about each animal on each enclosure. Occasionally throughout the zoo keepers would have buckets of feed for children (and adults if you want to) to hand feed the animals, we saw this with the pigs and later on the deers, which yes I did actually hand feed when I could finally get past all the children. So that's a nice little added extra. You can buy a pot of pellet feed to give to the animals at the store by the entrance, however it's £2.50 for a small tub, if I remember right, so we opted not to do that and yet I got to feed a deer anyway. At the end of the zoo there is the dinosaur walk, you don't have to go though it but you can, I found it quite cute and am sure children would love it. It's not a long walk but it does have a couple benches along the path. There are a lot of dinosaurs to see, some move slightly and make noise, some don't and they even have there own version of the Jurassic park car at the end with the T-rex. Overall this is a fantastic zoo to visit for all ages, there is plenty to see and plenty to do. For anyone thinking about doing a zoo experience here it is definitely worth it, we do hope to do one again in the future but regardless if we do or not we'll definitely be...
Read moreIt's not a bad place for smaller children. When we first arrived, I felt a little disappointed as it felt very small and not very well organised. But, we were pleasantly surprised when we found the dinosaur area. It was a beautiful walk, in a woods, with lots of realistic exhibits. The majority of the exhibits roar and move, and not just mechanical movements as you usually find. It's quite a large area to walk around for small children but there are pushchairs available to hire, I'm not sure how many, so it would probably be a good idea to book one, if possible, when you book your tickets. I'm not a fan of zoos, and the animal enclosures here are a perfect example of why. The enclosures are far too small, although the staff have tried to make make the areas naturalistic. Visitors are allowed inside some of the pens with staff for 'animal experiences', which would seem contrary to how they describe wanting this to be a natural experience for the animals. There are a number of play areas which are really great with a separate area for toddler play. The toilets are accessible and provisions have been made for wheelchair users. There is ample, free parking, just a stones throw from the entrance. The cafè is small, but there is a relatively good choice of meals, if somewhat overpriced, £12 for a 9" pizza! £9 for a 'vegan' burger meal, which wasn't a vegan burger it was a veggie burger. The chips were nice, though, including vegetarian and vegan options. I was very pleased that the vegan options weren't limited to a baked potato with beans, a few of the larger theme parks should take a leaf out of Hoo Zoos book on this regard, there is hot meals, cakes and biscuits and even vegan ice cream and lollies! The staff were helpful and kind. In my opinion, the whole outdoor areas could do with a good clean and tidy up. There were large pieces of debris and cardboard scattered around. All in all, it's not a bad day out, but rather overpriced for what it is. I think the main downside, for me, was that we were informed on arrival that they don't supply a map of the site, you have to download the app and I couldn't do that as I had no space for any more apps. So, probably it would be a good idea to print the map off before you visit. I will return, though, as my grandson, aged 3, really loved it. *edit - I have only just read some of the reviews, and I have to say, it seems that the staff who reply to Hoo Zoo reviews are not willing to take suggestions or criticism well, in my opinion this speaks volumes about the state of the customer service. The replies to the honest reviews, which include criticism, are argumentative, biased, and just plain rude. Hoo Zoo you need to work on this area of your customer...
