Everyone knows how The Famous, Sycamore Gap tree or Robin Hood tree was a popular photographic subject, described as one of the most photographed trees in the country and, It derived its alternative name from featuring in a prominent scene in the 1991 film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. The tree won the 2016 England Tree of the Year award. It was roughly 150 years old. A really great walk from steel Rig car park, with great views, quite a few ups and downs. The SAD bit, It was felled in the early morning of 28 September 2023 in what Northumbria Police described as "an act of vandalism". The felling of the tree led to an outpouring of anger and sadness. Read moreIt’s become a bit of an iconic place to visit. Of course made famous by the scenes in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman certainly ramped up interest in this section of Hadrian’s Wall. It’s worth a visit though. Incorporate it during a hike of the Wall Path, or park at Castle Rigg car park and stroll on over in an easterly direction. Two paths will take you there. Either the Wall Path running on south side of the wall, or the steeper and trickier footpath running immediately adjacent to the wall and following it’s line. There was a few people there at the tree, some looking for a photo others just chillin’. It was great to see it with the tree looking rather splendid in the springtime...
Read moreI think like every other visitor to this place, I just wanted a picture at the Robin Hood Prince of Theives tree, although I always wondered why he went to Nottingham from Dover via Hadrians wall. The walked in from Steel Rigg car park along the wall. Its not far but there's some steep ups and downs....not too tough, although with a 2yo in one arm and pulling a 5yo in the other hand was a bit of an effort. We took the wall lower track back, much easier and probably recommened if you have kids or aren't too fit. The tree itself was alright for a bit of film nostalgia and the views from the ridge are great. It's not somewhere to go on it'd own but if you link it in with a visit to a firt it's...
