It's a gibbet! It's a bit grim, really. Interesting, however; it's the highest point around (I'm sure I could see the sea to the east), cold, windy and a bit spooky. The story of the murder of Ms Crozier is fascinating - makes you wonder why they made such a grim example of Mr Winter, her murderer (read it all in the metal plaque). If you visit, be sure to go down into Elson and have a drinkie in the The Bird in the Bush (I have no affiliation -...
Read moreReally good place to visit. When you see the gibbet you get an uncontrollable urge to find out more on what happened. Some quick history is the original gibbet was erected in 1792 to suspend the body of William Winter who had murdered an old woman, Margaret Crozier in the nearby village of Raw. You may wonder why people visit this site but go and see it and you will...

The Gibbet placed high on hill basically acts as a solitary warning of what the law round there would do to murderous villains. The location is steeped in history with a worn but still readable description of what happened on this spot in 1791, and why the gibbet was erected and left there. Some walkers came by but its mainly just a very quiet area that is surrounded by woodlands and beautiful views. Which helps if its the last thing you're ever...
