During Summer 2021, my fiancé and I travelled from our then home in Crystal Palace South London, to spend some quiet time on the banks of Loch Lomond. While we were there we had such a great experience with the RSPB at the Balmaha Visitor Centre, learning about the birdlife and the environment from enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff.
During Spring 2022, we visited Pulborough Brooks for the first time, as it was arguably the easiest reserve to home, with the most straightforward access via public transport. This visit was the embryonic stage of something much much bigger for us as a couple.
We registered as members on that trip directly because of the volunteer staff at Pulborough. They were friendly and cheerful and had a personable way about them. Not only did they proffer well-informed simplistic information on the hides, the sightings, the nightime trails and events there, they were appreciative of our enthusiasm for learning. BTW. We're not OAPs but we're not millenials either.
It is possible that a beginners fervor can be postponed and shelved by the Swarovski binoculars, the understated element of competition in conversations in hides or the lists of sightings at an RSPB site. But the folks at Pulborough are fantastic, reminding us that the world of wildlife is not embedded in rivalry and can be enjoyed in any way by anyone.
This weekend just gone, we returned to Pulborough Brooks, walking from home, in Pulborough.
Due in part to the RSPB, we moved our lives from South London to to West Sussex, not only for my partner to work in the wine industry but to fully enjoy everything the RSPB has to offer.
We were reminded by the staff there that we'd made a positive move, even though they didn't know we'd become neighbours. They were cheerful, helpful, assistant, friendly and their expertise as always was invaluable, thanks...

Read more#LocalGuides I went to #RSPB Pulborough as a day out with the family. We had a great day out and spent most of the day here. We arrived and found ample parking and a very nice visitors center.
We discovered we could hire binoculars which where great. Most of the time when this happens they are cheap and nasty but in this case they where great and the kids loved them.
All staff members where extremely helpful and had a lot of information to hand. The also provided the kids with a pack to keep them occupied while walking round.
Out on the trails you where left to do what you wanted in the sense of there way no interruption and allowed to take as long as you wished. We did find a disabled toilet half way round which was a life saver. The whole route was 5.5 miles however I did see there was #mobility scooters so mobility is not an issue.
Once we went round and found all the hides, we finished the trip with a cup or tea and cake in the cafe which was very nice.
One thing we realised we had forgotten was some snacks for the kids and drink so please ensure you pack some. In all it was a great day out and if you are a member even cheaper than being a...
