I am grateful that they now have the Doctoral College.
As a past student, I didn't benefit greatly from the PhD experience.
I'd much rather have done another qualification but didn't have the money to retrain and had been struggling to get a job and so I did a funded PhD on the basis that it is better to do something rather than nothing...and it was fantastic to have something to do that also provided financial security at a difficult time. Anyway, I worked hard but, sadly, the hard work didn't pay off.
No disrespect, but I can't help but feel that perhaps PhD funding or aspects of PhD funding need a rethink as time and money are precious resources. Perhaps consider what topics and subjects are valued by employers and direct the funding to these.
I wouldn't say that the PhD was a waste of time but I am extremely relieved that I didn't fund it.
