Although there are 16 listed names of bodies of water in the Lake District, only one could be technically classed as a lake. Bassenthwaite Lake, situated in the north of the region near Keswick, is the only one that is actually a lake.
The Lake District has 16 major lakes and reservoirs, plus many tarns, rivers, and streams. However, some say there are actually 16 or 17 lakes, depending on how you count Brothers Water. Brothers Water is sometimes called the Lake District's largest tarn, and sometimes its smallest lake.
Some of the largest lakes in the Lake District include: Windermere: The largest lake in the Lake District, measuring 14.8 square kilometers Ullswater: 8.9 square kilometers
Derwentwater: 5.5 square kilometers
Bassenthwaite Lake: 5.3 square kilometers Coniston Water: 4.0 square kilometers
The Lake District's lakes are a popular destination for activities like walking, cycling, boating, and paddleboarding. You can also fish in most of the lakes, except for reservoirs and privately owned lakes.
The Lake District's volcanic rock, high rainfall, and deep glacial valleys all contribute to the many lakes in this district.

Read moreBeautiful walk today around Derwent water although some parts were a bit muddier than expected and other parts I lost the path and ended up going onto the main road until I was able to find a suitable walk way again by the shore but once on it the views all around are breathtaking and well worth the effort. Quite a few paddle boarders took to the water after around 10am and swimmers and the banks all seemed to be lined with their clothes, shoes, bags and other personal items strewn around here there and everywhere, but it is Sunday... So maybe the only day so many get to do it. Was happy to find the Centenary stone (millennium stone) also and the backdrop to them is amazing so well worth a look and photo . If you do visit here from away, be sure before you go to visit SUPRISE VIEW. It is only 5 minutes away from the lake (10 max) and well worth a look. Just type in Google map SUPRISE VIEW and it will take you to it. Definatly worth a look and you can drive straight up to the view point. Beatiful waters, beatiful scenery, stunning...
Read moreWandering down from Keswick for the first time, and the view emerging from the trees, is one of the few times, I was astonished in my life. It is absolutely wonderfully gorgeous, and if you have never seen it for yourself, watch the Star Wars scene where the X-Wings flew over the water. Even major film makers know a beautiful place when they see one!
Access is easy. Keswick is ten minutes walk away, there is a large carpark a few minutes away to the north, which also has toilets. The path that runs down the eastern shore soon brings you to peace and quiet, woodland mottled in sunlight from a high sun, providing shade on the hot days. And the views from all angles, are just beautiful in all the best ways, at all times of all the days.
Everything is so close here, and yet so beautiful, you can spend an hour here, or a day, and every...
