Ditchling Beacon are probably the two words that send shivers down cyclists backs. Especially on the infamous London to Brighton Bike Ride. I've made it up the Beacon on 4 occasions now myself on the BHF bike ride. It's quite a landmark leaving a mere 9 miles remaining once at the top. The climb up can catch you out. With a total of 1.1 miles and twisty short climbs. You secret is to pace it or you will burn out too quickly. The Beacon can be seen way before passing through Ditchling village. Beautiful village with nice pubs, shops. The wall of the South Downs seems to almost loom over Ditchling like a tidal wave. And it's not until you start the ride up you realise how steep it is. The views at the top are simply stunning. Views right across to Brighton and and the Sussex countryside to the north. There is a car park at the top also. Definitely worth either cycling up and or driving to. Well...

Read moreThe highest point in East Sussex and a superb place for bracing country walks with sweeping views. There's history too, as the site contains traces of an Iron Age hillfort. The ground can be very muddy in winter so robust footwear is a must, but paths are generally well marked and the grass is kept low. Good place to see wildflowers in summer, and the dew ponds reflect the evening sun beautifully. Winter sunsets from the South Downs ridge can be truly stunning and worth staying late for. The well maintained hilltop parking area is free for National Trust members, otherwise charges apply. If you're driving here, be careful to set navigation to the parking area and not the beacon itself, or Maps will direct you past the entrance at which point you can't turn around until you've gone all the way...
