Fantastic walking routes and beautiful scenery. The jewel of South Wales. Main peaks incl. Pen Y Fan (the highest peak in the park, and in fact in the whole of South Wales at 886 metres) and Corn Du - just 13 meters shorter than Pen Y Fan. Main towns in / nearby include Brecon, Talybont-on-Usk and Abergavenny (all beautiful), and Merthyr (less beautiful). Several A-roads cross the park as well as smaller lanes and roads.

National Trust maintains the paths in the park but they still have the potential to be treacherous so suitable clothing and footwear a must (the amount of time I see people in tshirts and sandles)! The mist can roll in fast and without warning so be prepared. It can be so thick it's difficult to see 5 feet in front of you. Follow usual good practice when hiking - don't go alone, let others know where you are and when you'll return, good footwear and clothing etc. So many different routes and car parks serve the park so do your research and know your paths and their difficulty before going.

Keep your eyes open for the military practicing in the area. Sheep roam and birds nest so dogs must be kept...

We visited the Craig Cerrig Gleisiad on a wet Sunday afternoon. Car park was easy to find right off the A470 and had space for us as well as ~10 other cars and a Scout minibus. We were distracted by a path to the picnic area which appeared to continue up to a trail and then had to turn back after maybe 200m to find the real trail head - hint it’s in a different direction to the benches! At the trail head we found a good map and info board and a well made path up through the lower slopes. Once we crossed the gate in the stone wall the path changes and becomes more rugged. Higher up it gets even more rugged still - consider this a reasonably challenging hike - but well signed and with a clear path at all times. Our 5 year old has good boots and stamina and was ok. Weather wasn’t too bad when we went, intermittent light rain, but it is a steep ascent and in warmer weather would be quite a workout. Views fantastic and scenery breathtaking. Definitely worth the climb and we will come back again in better weather to enjoy this nice little...

This is Wales at it's best! The first time I walked Pen Y Fan was when I moved to Wales in 2009, I fell in love with the most spectacular scenery I've ever seen. I loved it then and I love it now. On my first walk the weather was awful but it doesn't matter because you still get a very different experience of nature and the surrounding area whilst you're hiking, on the plus side when the weather is bad it's less crowded! Reaching the top always leaves me feeling exhilarated and nothing beats being in and amongst nature. The views are incredible, not just from the top but all around. My second trip was just as beautiful, this place will always hold special memories, if you haven't walked Pen Y Fan yet, do it you'll love it 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Parking: Paid parking right next to the hiking trail, can get busy so alternative parking is available on the main road. Disabled parking is also available.

Toilet: toilet facilities...
