The castle appears to have superseded an earlier Norman motte-and-bailey castle, which is first mentioned in records dating from 1262.

Very overgrown but this gives the place an absolutely magical feeling to it! This castle is located on private property. We drove down the drive to Billy Bobs Farm and managed to find a farmer, who was happy to tell us where to find the castle after we asked him permission to see it. Just be friendly and understanding that this castle is not on public land.

Fascinating site that was featured on TV Time Team some years ago (available on Youtube). Ruins are gradually disappearing beneath ivy and undergrowth but many features, and the huge overall size, can still be seen. Site is private but access possible, if you believe in the "right to roam". Easiest access is from the public footpath through Llangibby Castle Farm, then bear right down a track with a private...
