This underground construction possibly dates back to 200 BC and was probably in use for 500 years. Fogous are found in West Cornwall,UK and would have been in small settlements. The use is uncertain, possibly for storage, possibly for hiding in from enemies, possibly for habitation or ceremonial use. This one is accessible, although part of the roof area is quite low. A light is needed as it is dark in there. ( Halliggye Fogou is old Cornish for Cave amongst the willows")

Amazing survivor from about 500 BC. An underground passageway of uncertain purpose. Park at Trelowarren Estate and about half a mile walk (route is shown on interpretation board). Down some steep steps to passage which is about 20 feet long, with low headroom. There are other, less accessible parts, which require crawling. Take a torch. Essential visit if you are interested in such things. Note that it is CLOSED, with locked gate, from Sept to April.

Worth the little detour into the Estate, then walk up hill on a stony track. The energy of this site was intense. You can walk through subtranion passages and then crawl further, if you dare, into the lower tight slots. The mystery of the place is in the air. Peaceful grass site on the top in a remote location. Not accessible if you have mobility concerns. Go explore her passages 😛❤️

Worth the trek, if you can find it. I really recommend plotting it out on Google first. I followed the directions EH gave to the car park, but if I had ignored that and simply followed the sign that pointed in the opposite direction I could have driven a lot closer. Instead we went from the car park and following the information board there, had us trek around a cabbage field (reminder: trespass is NOT illegal in the UK and is a civil matter - there is nothing they can do to stop you) to eventually reach it. You WILL need a torch, preferably a proper one. The place is steeped in history, even if small. Go as far as you can to the end, which requires a little crouching, and sit down and turn off the torch. You'll be in perfect, absolute blackness, now imagine our ancestors and how close you've...

Very curious improved hole in the ground!

It's similar to English Heritage description but the part you can see down the steps seems to be different to the plan above? We could not see any sign of a side tunnel ??? It was locked up and tunnel was only visible through a wrought iron gate on our visit.

There is a rechargeable torch in a box outside which was flat. We took our own large torch with us.

Access to it by car is along challenging country estate roads. Not suitable if you don't like washing off mud or are unused to reversing down single track roads More suitable for walkers or bicycles to access

Definitly a curious and interesting thing to view....the visit will...

My Brother used to work on Home Farm so I'm very familiar with this Iron Age fogou. It is probably one of the best preserved fogous in Cornwall. Yes you will need a good torch, and yes if your not local to the area it can be difficult to find, But it is worth the effort!!!! You know I hope it stays that way! It would be a terrible thing for it to become all commercialised "Just look at what a commercialised licensed to print money Stonehenge has become" as well as so many other "that were once free" ancient monuments .......... Yes take donations for its upkeep NOT Millions for faceless people to live off!...
