A real educational gem just a stones throw from the main road with free parking (for upto maybe 8-10 cars on unmarked gravel pitches) for visitors right by the entrance gate. Upon entering the "site", if only visiting for a "quick fix" or are short of time, continue straight on the path and before it swings off to the right there is a short grassy path to your left, take that path and follow it around and you will soon be presented with Milom,s unique version of "Milom Henge". This display is made all the more dramatic by the fact that you don't just have to see, feel and read about all the different rocks and their origins but you can also witness a real working quarry from a viewing area looking down into the mouth of it from a safe fenced off advantage point. When done re trace your steps and go... OR If your after a longer visit with a good walk and fantastic views then, upon entering the site, take your immediate right, up a track, towards huge pines and towering trees (this has a public footpath sign pointing towards it) and continue along an easy to follow forest path. It will lead you around the quarry with an array of wildlife to look out for and eventually take you upto a viewing Tower which from the top will get you some fantastic views of nearby mountains and fells and also the tarn and if your really lucky, even wild deer (yes even with the quarry noise these beautiful animals do live here), and when done simply follow the path all the way around and eventually back to the start and once there you can take the short trip to the rocks before you go. This circular walk can be a bit muddy in places when wet but overall the path is no match for a pair of good waking boots. Also my visit was a little grey and cloudy. But I bet on a nice day it is an all together different experience again. One that I will definatly be doing. Definatly...
Read moreFirstly the directions were wrong. If you leave the village you have gone too far, google tries to take you to the aggregate main gate, this does not take you to the rock park. Once in the actual car park, there is no signage to the rock park. There are several paths off one takes you to a view point, but no where near the rock garden, but a nice view over the quarry. Instead go through the gate marked blasting sentry point 3, then follow this for a few yards until it branches, it’s the less well travelled path, leading you up a hill. Once in the garden, it’s all a bit weedy but with lovely big boulders and explanations about the type of rock and how it was formed. There are a couple of picnic benches and a nice view of the quarry. It’s a nice stroll, the dog loved it, no one else was about so we played rock music to the rocks. Definitely needs better...
Read moreCute little park brimming with rock facts just off the main road. Small car park and then a short walk uphill to the park. Signs telling you all the rock facts you could want and it's so nice to see the rocks relaxing in their natural habitat. There is some mild excitement as you approach the clearly dangerous haematite closed off in its solitary enclosure, in our visit it was docile! Great view of the working quarry, we visited on a weekend so no activity but visiting during the week would be very interesting. There's a longer walk around the site ending in an observation platform right over the quarry. The interactive aggregate exhibit is not to be missed! I was excited to see the space left to expand the park with...
