Moreton Corbet Castle began life as a simple motte and bailey castle in the early 12th century. The Corbet family acquired the castle in 1239 and rebuilt it in stone, the tower and gatehouse date from this construction. Sir Andrew Corbet began the extensive remodelling in the 16th century to bring the castle up to date with a large Elizebethan manor house. Sir Andrew was immortalised for his work with a keystone above the gate featuring his elephant and castle crest, initials and the date of completion a year after his death. Sir Vincent Corbet fought for the king during the English Civil War and the castle was damaged as a result of repeated skirmishes. It was repaired after the war but fell into dereliction after it was abandoned as a residence in the 18th century. The site is under the care of English Heritage, and although it lacks any facilities other than a small car park the site is well maintained and the information provided...

Impressive ruins in a beautiful peaceful location and free to visit ☺️ A lovely place to have a wander around, read about the history of the buildings and have a picnic. The little church next door is well worth visiting too.

Unfortunately our visit was spoilt by the behaviour of some visitors. Children were allowed to run around screaming and treat the ancient ruins like an adventure playground. We saw several parents actively encouraging their children to climb all over the walls, even giving them a bunk up high onto the windows. One man climbed up the external walls together with a small boy and walked around over the top of a window with him, high above the ground! Very disrespectful to the history of the site and a total disregard of the importance of preserving the ruins for future generations. Also extremely dangerous....

After the ruins, you can see that the castle has been a great, beautiful and unique edifice. You can only dream and imagine how people have lived here, what fates have come to them.

Next to the palace is a simple church, built at that time, with beautiful stained-glass windows depicting the most important life events of the ancient castle inhabitants.

Beautiful interiors and... tombs. The church is still working today. If there is an election, a small donation can be left to help keep the site clean and attractive to tourists.

A lovely, quiet place for recreation, exploration of history, and for a family picnic.

There is a small...

I am a lover of castles and this one is up there on the top of my list, with its stunning, dramatic, gothic-style architecture it is in the remote countryside about 15minutes from Shrewsbury. No facilities whatsoever, free to enter, I really love these non touristy hidden gems. We were lucky as there was not a soul there when we arrived, I was looking exactly for something like this place for a backdrop for my artwork, having done alot of castles in the north of Wales we were heading back and found it, I should give it a bad rating so that people won't go and ruin it but highly recommended!

Moreton Corbet Castle is a ruined medieval castle and Elizabethan manor house. It is now looked after by english heritage though is still owned by the Corbet family. Visiting is daylight hours and is free . Apart from a car part there are no facilties on site. The castle or what remains of it still has some wonderful architectural detail, particularly in the elizabethan manor part. The castle was once stormed by legendary Knight William Marshall on behalf of King John. The walls also show pock marks from musket shot from the civil war. A really fascinating place and well worth a visit

Absolutely fantastic place to stop for a picnic. Unlike some much lesser ruins we have visited, there is no entrance fee, which is definitely a refreshing change! The ruins themselves are quite expansive, with both remnants of castle structures and part of a stately home. There is plenty of information around about the castle too - although it fails to mention where a lot of the castle stones must have gone (easily realised by a quick glance at a nearby church and walled cemetery...). Would definitely recommend a visit.
