Moreton Corbet Castle began life as a simple motte and bailey castle in the early 12th century. The Corbet family acquired the castle in 1239 and rebuilt it in stone, the tower and gatehouse date from this construction. Sir Andrew Corbet began the extensive remodelling in the 16th century to bring the castle up to date with a large Elizebethan manor house. Sir Andrew was immortalised for his work with a keystone above the gate featuring his elephant and castle crest, initials and the date of completion a year after his death. Sir Vincent Corbet fought for the king during the English Civil War and the castle was damaged as a result of repeated skirmishes. It was repaired after the war but fell into dereliction after it was abandoned as a residence in the 18th century. Read moreImpressive ruins in a beautiful peaceful location and free to visit ☺️ A lovely place to have a wander around, read about the history of the buildings and have a picnic. The little church next door is well worth visiting too.
Unfortunately our visit was spoilt by the behaviour of some visitors. Children were allowed to run around screaming and treat the ancient ruins like an adventure playground. We saw several parents actively encouraging their children to climb all over the walls, even giving them a bunk up high onto the windows. One man climbed up the external walls together with a small boy and walked around over the top of a window with him, high above the ground! Very disrespectful to the history of the site and a total disregard of the importance of preserving the ruins for future generations. Also extremely dangerous....
Read moreAfter the ruins, you can see that the castle has been a great, beautiful and unique edifice. You can only dream and imagine how people have lived here, what fates have come to them.
Next to the palace is a simple church, built at that time, with beautiful stained-glass windows depicting the most important life events of the ancient castle inhabitants.
Beautiful interiors and... tombs. The church is still working today. If there is an election, a small donation can be left to help keep the site clean and attractive to tourists.
