AVOID!!! £4 for parking, we literally stopped at the barrier and turned around, we kept driving straight which lead us to another beach with FREE side of the road parking. Who in there right mind would actually pay to park to see a beach? Absolute robbery. Look, say it the way it is. 🤦‍♀️ It should definitely be free, or free during low seasons. It’s April and it’s cold and windy and paying to see waves and be cold … I don’t think so. Lots of other places around, thank god we kept following the road along, one road leads to another. I also seen lots of other cars pulled up or turning around at the barrier on...

So many people talk about Tyrella beach when visiting south Down, and certainly it's long stretch of sand and views across Dundrum Bay to the Mourne Mountains have their appeal, but like many of the coastal spots in the area, the reality is somewhat duller.

Pretty sand dunes lead to a rather bland beach, hued in grey.

Beloved by horse riders, and dog walkers.

The car park adjacent charges during the daytime, something like £4 per car. Which may be enough to put some off.

There are better beaches out there. Don't believe...

There are beaches in Ireland that lay claim to epic film locations, exotic inhabitants or remote beauty. They all have their charms but can they say that they are where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea? Whether sun, wind, snow or rain this is an inspirational place that has known tragedy and loss but still possesses immense beauty. From St John's Point Light house, ( tallest in Ireland) on the north side to the majestic Mournes on the south with nothing but the sky and sea in between. Lose yourself and...

Hugely disappointing and plastered in peoples' discarded beach items, litter and plastic toys. The plastic marine pollution at the western end of the beach is appalling. I've never seen anything worse. Also, some inconsiderate people have just let their dogs foul on the wooden walkways through the dunes and that is just another negative thing about this beach. I would not recommend visiting here.

Best avoided in June, July and August and especially on summer public holidays as it can be really bunged. Note that the local Council charge for admission to the beach during the summer months. I don't know how much they charge because, as stated above, I avoid going to Tyrella during this period I prefer to go on a stormy day in the winter and then you might be the only person on the beach.
