Attractive ruined castle with much of the structure still intact.
Visitors can walk around the ruins, view information on various signs and notices and see many of the original and late addition features.
The castle is interesting from an historical perspective for various reasons, one being the modifications made to fortify it against enemy artillery and to utilise cannon for defence of the castle. These modifications are still largely intact or at least sufficiently so to recognise their purpose.
Sadly. I saw no murder holes or obvious machicolations, but it's an impressive structure and the many sieges it endured and key battles it is connected with also add to the significance of it as an historical monument.
Frankly it's an extraordinary piece of history which still stands hard by the border betwixt Scotland and England with the Tweed running alongside the castle and beautiful views in...
Read moreA great castle to visit and walk around unfortunately for us we turned up there was barriers blocking entry to the castle across the bridge (which we only found out when we were direct in front of said barriers). We did manage to get inside by descending and climbing the inner mote. Not easy with a three year old and nine year, but was very disappointed that there were to signs at the entrance or car park. We were encountered a dog walker who said that the bridge had been closed for four months, surely ample time to fix up some kind of advance notices to avoid disappointment. Found what we thought might be a medieval or Tudor pottery shard dug in a mole hill, which was a added surprise. I have the knocked off of two stars, for the access issues and lack of notice prior to arriving at the castle, I do however agree with other reviews the village of Norham is...
Read moreNorham castle has been described as the most dangerous place to be in England. This was, of course, a long time ago when skirmishes across the England/Scottish border were an almost daily occurrence. There are a number of boards situated around the site explaining the features of the castle. It has very thick walls which were banked up with soil to nullify the effects of cannon balls and it originally had platforms on which powerful cannon were deployed to repeal attackers. There is a small car park which had an overhanging tree that could interfere with a visiting motor caravan but it is easy to park and...
