It was a darkish, wet and cold day in summer when we went to see the old Oswestry Racecourse, we had prepared a few sandwiches etc for lunch and went out for the day. We stumbled on the racecourse purely by accident so stopped to take a look. As it was now dinnertime we could also eat or lunch there? The carpark was ok, a bit rough and bumpy but nothing too bad, only one other car there and so we parked up and sort of followed the unmarked track. The racecourse, according to the very old tired sign-in the carpark explained it has been shut many many years, and was a large figure of eight track and two laps was, from memory 4 miles? It may have been 4 laps was 2 miles?!!? 🤦♂️ Sadly, the rain made the grass very wet and muddy and was frustratingly bumpy underfoot so we only had a 20 minute stroll.
It's not an easy path to walk and I have an arthritic big toe so next time I decide to go there it will be on a warm dry day with my proper walking boots on my feet.
It's a nice quiet place and the BIG BONUS, is the drive to it via the mountains was...
Read moreGood open area for a walk/dog walking. Free parking in a good sized car park. There are dog bins dotted around the route. Either walk left or right out of the car park and follow the path, each will take you on a loop to the top of the racecourse and back. Be aware that you do need to cross a road in the middle and that the signage on the fingerposts aren't particularly helpful if you're not following the Offa's Duke route. There are benches around the route a d some good views from the top. There is a steady incline to the top of the racecourse. The ground isn't suitable for a mobility scooter as it is quite rough under foot in places and there is some...
Read moreThis historic old racecourse site is a nice place to walk with or without dogs. A free car park adjoins the site. Lots of trees and heath like grasslands and the potential for a much longer walk if you head in to the heavily wooded area as the path there connects with others. Peaceful most of the time, it is popular so can get people busy. Beautiful display of bluebells through the woods at that time of the year. Mainly flat terrain but it can get very muddy.
Going back to walking the dog there are dog mess bins. If you have a dog the downside is that in parts the road is nearby so you need to keep an eye on your dog to prevent a...
