I went overnight tent camping at Stepper Point as one of my summer camp experiences around 1967 or so. The pictures are still as I remember it all those years ago. As the house we were staying in was in Polzeath, straight across Padstow Bay, we had arranged to light a fire big enough for those staying at the house to see. When they saw it, they were supposed to flash car headlights. Just as we set the fire in a rock wall, a guided lifeboat tour came around Stepper Point and we waved enthusiastically. However, this was interpreted as “Help!!!”
During the night, a strong gale force wind whipped up and shredded one of the tents, resulting in those campers piling into the other tents.
