Visited Craig Goch Dam recently and was genuinely impressed by its majestic architecture. Completed in 1904, this masonry masterpiece stands as a testament to thoughtful engineering and aesthetic vision—something sorely lacking in many of today’s soulless constructions.
Unfortunately, my visit coincided with essential maintenance work, which meant the water level was significantly reduced. While this was a slight letdown visually, I fully understand the importance of preserving such a historic structure. I’ll definitely return to witness it in full force once the work is complete.

Read moreWhen you first round the bend and see this dam, it is truly breathtaking. The massive expanse of water cascading down coupled with the noise it makes, is overwhelming for the senses. Walk, cycle or drive along the full length of the narrow top. Photo opportunities abound wherever you look. There are several dams built all along this valley primarily to supply water to Birmingham and they make a great tour. Personally though, this one really stands out. Read morePeace and tranquillity like you cant imagine . No background distant noises of industry or motorways . The only noise is the cars that drive there in a respectful way and not screaming boy racers . I would love to have seen the dam in full flow to experience the thunderous roar of the water cascading over the top which contradicts the tranquiluty , but i went there in full drout so i actualy heard the silence ! .
