Visited Craig Goch Dam recently and was genuinely impressed by its majestic architecture. Completed in 1904, this masonry masterpiece stands as a testament to thoughtful engineering and aesthetic vision—something sorely lacking in many of today’s soulless constructions.

Unfortunately, my visit coincided with essential maintenance work, which meant the water level was significantly reduced. While this was a slight letdown visually, I fully understand the importance of preserving such a historic structure. I’ll definitely return to witness it in full force once the work is complete.

Craig Goch isn’t just a dam—it’s a reminder that infrastructure can be both functional and beautiful. Let’s hope future projects take a page...

When you first round the bend and see this dam, it is truly breathtaking. The massive expanse of water cascading down coupled with the noise it makes, is overwhelming for the senses. Walk, cycle or drive along the full length of the narrow top. Photo opportunities abound wherever you look. There are several dams built all along this valley primarily to supply water to Birmingham and they make a great tour. Personally though, this one really stands out. Take some time to read up on the history of the valley with its lost flooded villages and some of the stats available for how much water it contains etc. Well worth a visit if you are...

Peace and tranquillity like you cant imagine . No background distant noises of industry or motorways . The only noise is the cars that drive there in a respectful way and not screaming boy racers . I would love to have seen the dam in full flow to experience the thunderous roar of the water cascading over the top which contradicts the tranquiluty , but i went there in full drout so i actualy heard the silence ! . The mountain rd continues on to take you to Aberystwyth . But the mountain rd itself rd actualy terminates in devils bridge , Aberystwyth is a relatively short...

Scenic dam and reservoir. Would have been great to see it with the water overflowing the dam but water levels had been lowered to enable divers to work on the emergency overflow below the dam. We might forget that these structures need maintenance to keep them working safely. But they do of course. Still we stopped for a while to take in the scenery which is different from the other low level dams. There's more of a moorland landscape with occasional clumps of trees. Quite beautiful.

Part of elan valley which is worth a drive around starting at the visitor centre which has a great cafe, gift shop, info/displays on the valley etc and play park. Pick up free map so you can see where all the dams are, after driving around them all (2 have toilets in car park) took some fab photos. we then drove to Aberystwyth along the mountain road (signed posted) approx 24 miles, and had fish and chips by the sea and got some nice photos of the castle (ruins) there in the dusk.
