Not to be redundant or outdone by other reviews, but, in summary, everyone has been telling the truth. The place is absolutely beautiful and there is so much to explore. We spent about 3-4 hours there and feel like we could potentially come back for a week in this area to thoroughly explore more and more. The vast dams with intricate designs and grandiose impacts typical of the era of 1893 are stunning, but something less touched upon is the surrounding environment. The forests, nearby churches and smaller buildings are beautiful, and the smaller details shine by themselves, but paired with each dam, the whole environment sings. I completely recommend this area for hikes, with each trail bringing something new, and suggest to take it in rather than trying to run through the location.

Amazing place for a walk. Go to the visitor centre nearby and get a free map of the lakes area, and specific walks too. We visited on a stunning August day and the photos reflect this, but I bet its still stunning in the middle of winter. One interesting thing, look at my pics taken at the end of August (we were in the middle of a drought), and Christina Allen's photos and others taken a month earlier, the difference in the water levels is staggering. The people of Birmingham must be really thirsty!

Walk today from Elan Valley Visitor Centre around Caban Coch Reservoir taking in Nant Y Gro Dam, which has a lot of history from 2nd World War, over to Garreg Ddu Dam and back to visitor centre. The walk was about 9 miles with 1 steep climb the rest relatively easy. Took me just over 3 hours and will be walking it again soon. The views are fantastic. Word of warning though, part of the path runs parallel within 2 foot of the reservoir with loose rocks, so take care with younger family members.

What can I say, my heart skipped a beat a few times when I was here just a few days ago. The scenery was just simply breathtaking, I didnt want to blink in case I missed another amazing eye shot. The dams & the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen or experienced. The weather was grey & slightly damp, which for me was perfect to take in the surreal atmosphere created amongst the mountainous backdrops. Everything was worth it to just be there in that place at that time, hard to explain in words but you need to see this place if you have not witnessed it your self. Get a treat at Penbont Tea Rooms at Pen y Garreg, now one of the best places to have afternoon tea....
