Shingle beach with a backdrop of rugged sandstone cliffs. Relentless coastal erosion forms striking shapes in the base of the cliff, with caves, pillars and arches on a miniature scale. Different coloured bands of rock give the cliffs a very distinctive appearance, more similar to parts of the Jurassic coast than the rest of East Sussex. It's therefore unsurprising that fossils can be found here. The beach has appeared in a couple of music videos, firstly David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes and more recently Keane's Atlantic. There's plenty of free roadside parking a short walk from the beach. The walk to Winchelsea Beach is rewarded with a nice little café, and you can go further to Rye Harbour to make a day of it. There are toilets a couple of minutes walk from the beach, though they are closed over the winter season. Important note - the sea comes right up to the base of cliffs, so be aware of the tide times if you're following the beach any distance...

One of the loveliest local beaches, quieter than Camber sands or Hastings. Can walk from Pett to Winchelsea beach and then onto the nature reserve at Rye, a beautiful stretch of coastline the whole way along. Good for swimming and even has a few sandy spots when the tide is low so you can avoid having to walk over pebbles to get in and out. Great for rock pooling when the tide is low too. One small cafe at the Pett end and another small one the Winchelsea end, other than that it's just about...

This is a lovely natural beach with rock pools teeming with life and fossils waiting to be discovered. Do be warned, there are large areas that are estuary based, creating that soft mud that wading birds love and swallow your shoes instantly. The tide moves very fast here so always keep an eye on where the water is, it can sneak round you while you're engrossed in a rock pool. It's also a good place to see fulmar and grey seals. If you are interested in nature and don't mind a bit of muck it's...

Nice little beach area. At low tide you can see the remains of a petrified forest in the mud. The cliffs are very crumbly so be careful but there are lots of fossils to be found and the occasional dinosaur footprint in the bedrock of you know where to look. There’s lots of nice sand here and lots of shells and rock pools for the kids to explore. Not much parking or facilities though.

Love this place. A vast expanse of coast and never too busy. There seems to be a special light there. In the little church there is a great selection of 2nd hand books. You can do a lovely walk to Winchelsea or if you feel more ambitious to Rye Harbour. A visit here always lifts the soul.
