The road is very rough on the way up to the very small car park, which is free. Go through the gate and walk in the Romans footsteps along the Antonine Wall or follow the trail over the burn and up to the site of the fort. It’s a nice steady walk and there’s a fairly big area to cover to see it all. There are a number of information boards to read which help to explain what there is and where things are or would have been 2000 years ago. The area is used by a lot of dog walkers. I can’t blame them as it’s a lovely place to go, with some great views. There’s a waste bin in the car park so there’s no excuse to leave any rubbish behind. I would highly recommend a visit, reading the boards and use your imagination, it’s worth it, if only for the peace and quiet. There are no...
Read moreAccess is without charge and is unstaffed. It is owned by Historic Environment Scotland. Their website is good. This is a good visit for anyone interested in the Roman occupation of Scotland. Walking the ground gives a much clearer understanding of the magnitude of the Antonine Wall. The scale of the works are almost impossible to envisage from diagrams alone. Make Watling Lodge site a short drive away in Falkirk an essential companion visit to get the complete 'wow' experience. The approach is along an unpaved road with limited parking. Do have good warm and waterproof clothing. Good walking shoes or boots are recommended to let you have easy access over the whole site as it is covered in short grass and is fairly uneven. I absolutely...
Read moreRoughcastle. Roman Fort on Antonine wall. I had no idea this was here. The only other parts of the Antonine wall I’ve seen were not as impressive as this amazing site. We especially liked the ‘man traps’ which would originally have had lethal spikes inside. We are also delighted that we lived ‘north of the wall’ and we are the naughty Scot’s that the Romans were trying to keep at bay! Great woods to walk around. Lots of info boards to explain what you are seeing. We walked a short section of the JohnMuir trail which took us to the Falkirk wheel. Great half day of exploration in the woods and then watching the barges on the wheel....
