Fascinating place, very peaceful and quiet, allowing you to contemplate the sights it has seen. You can't get into it as it is in disrepair and is fenced off but you can get close enough to have a good look. The footpath/track to it is just past the community hall on the opposite side of the road. It will take you past some private cottages but there is a public footpath. Interestingly (but such a shame), the nearby Iron Age brochs (Dun Troddan & Dun Grugaig) were partially dismantled to provide stone for these barracks. These brochs are really worth a visit. They're still in amazing condition for their age, despite this wanton act of vandalism.

Barracks apparently built by general wade back during the uprisings. It is in a serious state of disrepair and currently fenced off and inaccessible due to loose masonry. It is not open to the public, unsafe and not accessible. Consists of two large buildings perhaps three or four stories high and some small annexes and stables. Some parking at the hall and a short walk away. Not worth a visit unless its made safe. No point visiting or trying to enter. Shame.

A well-ruined property with no sign of restoration going on , but very atmospheric in a beautiful location. Note that the barracks cannot be accessed and are fenced off due to safety considerations.

Know the history.

A place like this did not get built without need. So when people tell you the cause of Jacobitisim ended on Culloden Moor, remind them that the British Army clamped down on Scotland with garrisons and guard post EVERYWHERE after that in an all out assault on Highland culture and language.

Bernera is one of the major ones, which should give you some idea of the importance of the area historically that doesn't exist now.

Interpretation boards would go some distance to sorting that out, but only if they tell the truth of the matter and not the accepted history which, always remember, is written...
